After updating to Mac OS 10.5.4, I attempted to open Digital Editions.
Although 2 of the 3 books were originally purchased while on another computer with Adobe Reader 7 (I now have Adobe Reader 8.1.2), they have been working fine, and I believe the license was successfully transferred.
I received a prompt to download the relatively new Digital Editions 1.5.
Since then I get the following error message:
Adobe DRM Error
System: 5
State: 4
Class: 7
Code: 1
Message:

Your Adobe software could not be activated.
You have exceeded the number of permitted activations.
Adobe DRM Activator error.
Server Code: 14
Fault location: 7
Contact customer support.

I have established a case through the portal and also E-mailed someone named Ric Wright, but as this is a holiday week, I suppose everyone is backed up.

As of this morning July 3 the error message has changed to:
Adobe DRM Error
System: 5
State: 4
Class: 20
Code: 31
Message:

Your Adobe software could not be activated.
HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request.
Adobe DRM Activator error.
Client Code: 31 - HTTP Code: 574

I tried changing the firewall settings on my Intel iMac but that
made no difference. I have not changed the clock ever except for Daylight Savings automatic changes.

Martin, please open a web support case at http://www.adobe.com/support/contact

(tech support, not customer service)

Post the case # back here and I'll get someone to assist.

Thanks. I have a case number and just managed to read the reply - Case #0180276287. But all they did was refer me to pages I have already read. The error message is now back to the too many activations after a short stretch of the HTTP error message. I have also downloaded Reader 9 to see if that's made a difference, but it hasn't since it's a separate application.

Yuck..

Well first of all, I should note that all ebook reading was removed from Acrobat 8 (and isn't coming back in Reader 9). That's all handled by Digital Editions.

The crash could be coming from all kinds of directions. I'm going to ask a senior agent to take over your case, you can work on the crash details with them.

The situation is becoming more and more curious. This morning I was on the phone with Customer Support for nearly an hour, and it ended unresolved because they could not find the e-mail with which I activated digital editions. They suggested that if I could uninstall and re-install it, I might be able to register an activation e-mail.

I followed the directions to uninstall DE 1.5, including the My Digital Editions folder, but was not asked for an E-mail to activate by the installer. I then got a new error message:
Adobe DRM Error
System: 5
State: 4
Class: 22
Code: 1
Message:

Your Adobe software could not be activated.
No matching activation records found.

Eden Info: (0x30) No matching activation records found.
Soap Info: Client : No matching activation records found.
Adobe DRM Activator error.
Server Code: 30
Fault location: 22
Contact customer support.

There were also no books in the library (and no copies on the computer), so I restored the trashed folder from Apple's Time Machine backup. Now I'm still getting the same error message and about half the time the crash with a similar report to the previous one.

I then also tried to create a new activation profile at the URL given me by customer support, but it must be a page for old versions of Reader. It could not detect either Reader 9 or Acrobat Standard 7, which I still have on my machine. I then downloaded a .edn file, which I tried to open manually with Acrobat, but it only produced error messages saying Bad Session Header. Acrobat also only shows 2 of the 3 books in my digital library (also inaccessible).

So I have gone from too many activations to no activations, and my Adobe ID while working on the general Adobe site is not seen by your activation server.
