1. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
NotInUse Nov 5, 2008 11:45 PM (in response to NotInUse)Gradient fills are not altered by Envelopes.
Steps to reproduce bug:
1 Trash Prefs
2 Launch Illustrator
3 New Document (Any profile)
4 Fill rectangular object with gradient
5 Choose Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Warp
6 Choose Arc and move the slider all the way to the right (100%)
7 Click OK
Results:
Shape of object is transformed, but Gradient fill remains at the exact same angle as before.
Expected results: Shape of object is changed and gradient angle changes to match objects new shape.
Illustrator CS3 shows the correct, expected, behavior. However, due to the Free Transform Mesh bug in CS3 it makes working with these types of objects in CS3 difficult. So..... I've got to take art to and from CS3 and CS4 to work correctly, or go all the way back to CS2 for a working version here. -
2. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
NotInUse Nov 6, 2008 12:27 AM (in response to NotInUse)I've exhausted all options I can think of in Illustrator CS4 and can not achieve the appearance of Illustrator CS3 above in the Envelope. There seems to be no way to get the appearance I'm after in CS4 unless I rasterize the gradient fill and that's something I just don't want to do. -
3. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
Wade S Zimmerman Nov 6, 2008 1:21 AM (in response to NotInUse)Yes there is but it is not the ideal one of course the ideal one is if it either work the way you want it or to finally have a radar gradient.
The way to do it is to of course rasterize the rectangle before applying the warp effect.
But I admit I do not ever remember doing this in CS3.
? I guess I never had the need. -

Wade, you really shouldn't drink so late/early. That sentence is completely nonsensical :)
All previous version of Illustrator, with the Envelope feature (10-13.0.2) allow the gradient to be transformed by the Envelope without any rasterization.
I know this is simply a byproduct of the new gradients in CS4. Hopefully this can be fixed with a dot release, along with the ability to remove auto-generated helper nodes on meshes.
Posted here so others are aware, also files an official bug report. -
5. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
Wade S Zimmerman Nov 6, 2008 1:36 AM (in response to NotInUse)I just tried i in CS 3 it works the same way as CS 4. What setting do you apply to make this work?
It was always my understanding the only way you can get a gradient to follow a path was to create a blend.
Or as I wrote raster the gradient.
I must admit my memory could be deceiving me, but I do not know how to do what you say you do in CS3 or any earlier version of AI. -
6. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
OldBob1957 Nov 6, 2008 4:38 AM (in response to NotInUse)In CS3;
Object > Envelope Distort > Envelope Options and check the Distort Linear Gradients box.
I don't have CS4, so I can't test or verify the OP's problem, but my guess is, since he knew how to do it in CS3--it's broke in CS4.
Good to know. I use this a lot, too. Thanks Scott. -

(JC_Tremblay) Nov 6, 2008 5:26 AM (in response to OldBob1957)I just tested this with the Distort Linear Gradients option enabe and
it is woring in CS4. -

OldBob1957 Nov 6, 2008 6:26 AM (in response to NotInUse)Really? That makes me feel better about upgrading soon.
Scott? Silly question but, did you maybe miss checking the box? -

Wade S Zimmerman Nov 6, 2008 8:19 AM (in response to NotInUse)Hi JC how is Canada and the family? Glad to see you here again. I just checked it out as well and it works fine.
Old Bob
Oh yes you are correct I forgot about the setting in the Options you are correct of course.
Scott we both look like we have egg on our faces. -
10. Re: BUG: Envelope Distort does not alter gradient fills [CS4]
NotInUse Nov 6, 2008 9:42 AM (in response to NotInUse)Yup, I guess I shouldn't post at 2 am either. I completely missing the options. Just goes to show you what happens when a previously checked box by default is no longer checked :)
In the words of Emily Litella... Never mind -
