BranderChatfield Apr 22, 2008 7:07 AM (in response to BranderChatfield)So, what I've done is strip out individual chapters, reposition the images accordingly, and save as a smaller document. I've been inserting the chapters in the book palette, I've got the Table of Contents figured out.
One thing that is befuddling me is Section Numbering. The client wants the title of each section before the page number. Page numbering you can "continue from previous document". Can't you do that for section titles, or do you have to create such for each document in the palette? -

(Dominic_Hurley) Apr 30, 2008 2:29 PM (in response to BranderChatfield)No, I don't think ID will carry section markers or text variables across files, but it could probably be scripted. How many section titles are you dealing with? -

(Dominic_Hurley) May 4, 2008 3:14 PM (in response to BranderChatfield)I'd just use a text variable. Fourteen won't take that long to do. -
7. Re: InDesign CS2 Book Function Tutorial/Guidance
Mr. Met May 5, 2008 4:53 AM (in response to BranderChatfield)Why would you have to reposition all the images. Aren't they specific to a given page? Why would they fall off a page just because you've inserted additional pages/chapters?
As far as running section headers and footers, you're going to want to learn how to use nested styles and variable data functions of ID. I saw a seminar with Michael Murphy that describes exactly what you're requesting. Click through my name to email me and I'll pass on my notes. -

Mayhaps I am positioning/placing the images incorrectly? Mayhaps I am using ID incorrectly? The book has been one long text-flow. Let's say I place an image on page fifty-four, the start of chapter ten. An image dropped on top of the text box with text-wrap applied. Now the author sends me text for a new chapter to be inserted before chapter three, with a new image for that chapter. I place the cursor before chapter three's headline and insert the new text. Hence, a new text flow throughout which then makes the placement of the images not in the proper position... -

(J_Maloney) May 7, 2008 11:51 AM (in response to BranderChatfield)Why are you laying out a book that has yet to be written? I usually wake up, look around my bedroom and smile, thinking to myself "I have yet to be paid enough for THAT." -
10. Re: InDesign CS2 Book Function Tutorial/Guidance
BranderChatfield May 7, 2008 11:59 AM (in response to BranderChatfield)I'm not the author, only the designer. The author is a 93-year old gentleman writing his memoirs. This is his third book. The second book (368 pages) was a revision of the first book (208 pages). This third book (thus far 474 pages) is an expanded revision of the second book with additional chapters being added as he putters along... -

BranderChatfield May 7, 2008 1:16 PM (in response to BranderChatfield)Oh, yeah, that's sweet. Get to a certain point, adding documnets/chapters to the book palette. Tells me that the maximum number of documents you can add to a book is 100. HelpInfo says I can add up to a 1000. Crimony, this book is making me very very very very perplexed. -

Vernox May 7, 2008 6:08 PM (in response to BranderChatfield)The graphics issue you can ease by using inline graphics. You'll still have to tune, but the illustrations will move with the text if you insert text on earlier pages. This alone might solve you problem by making it possible to make additions without having to adjust the illustrations.
I'm presuming you're doing one chapter/document, so if the limit is 100 then you will have to look at collapsing chapters.
It does seem like a very awkward way to do a book, but if the pay is good... I've worked for similar clients, though rarely twice ;-)

MT.Freelance May 8, 2008 8:18 AM (in response to BranderChatfield)Brander, you may find Michael Murphy's video podcasts on long documents useful for review. You can find them and many more at his site:

Highly recommended.
