1. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
[Jongware] Oct 3, 2008 12:13 PM (in response to Pariah Burke)I remember having trouble copying graphic content (an arrow line) directly into a freshly created anchored object, to draw an arrow line between two texts. I gave up, created a text box instead (in which I *could* copy the arrow line), then selected that as text and copied it into the anchored object.
I fiddled with 'contents', setting it to 'graphic' instead of default 'unassigned', and tried "Paste Into", but neither worked. Fortunately, the workaround using 'text' did work. -
2. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(Nigel_Chapman) Oct 4, 2008 3:44 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)I'm not sure if this is the sort of issue you are looking for, but the most disappointing thing about anchored objects and a trap for the unwary is the little feature that text wrap is only applied to lines below the anchor point. In particular, this means that if you want to use an old-fashioned page layout with every image and call-out box across the top of a page, spanning the text area and pushing down the text on pages with images, you can't anchor them to the top corner of the page like you want to, because there is always at least one line that isn't below the anchor point which intersects with the picture.
I know the ostensible reason for this behaviour, and we don't need to go into that. It's just an issue, because the first time you read the manual it looks as if InDesign has a perfect method of placing images like this and having them move when you edit the txt, and then you find out it only works as you expect it to for pictures that don't intersect the text frame, or ones that you don't want to wrap round. -
3. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(T._Schmidt) Oct 10, 2008 10:41 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)Damn, so there is nothing I can do against it? I asked this question on the forum too. Yesterday I did a manual and wanted a little icon of each application (Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc.) at the beginning of the corresponding paragraph, like an initial over 2 rows. It only worked when I put an additional line before the first line which forced me to put the whole text frame one row above the standard raster of the document, which sucks. Is this still in CS4? -
4. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(Dave_Saunders) Oct 10, 2008 10:55 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)Yes, but from your description of what you're trying to do, it sounds like you should be using an inline rather than an anchor with the paragraph style set to have a 1 character, 2-line drop cap.

5. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(Dave_Saunders) Oct 10, 2008 11:06 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)Here's a question (and answer) for you Pariah:
Say you have an anchored text frame that contains two inline groups. The two groups are the same size as each other and rectangular and fully filled with opaque elements. You have set that anchored frame to fit to content.
So, how do you select the anchored text frame? In CS3, it can't be done because you always end up selecting one or other of the two groups. I ended up writing a script where I would select with the text tool the anchor point and the script would then select the anchored item for me.
In CS4, you can do it because the Select Container buttons are active for inline or anchored items in a story. Click on either of the groups and then click Select Container in the Control Panel.

(Nigel_Chapman) Oct 10, 2008 11:51 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)Dave,
I'm sure it was you who suggested to me that I could get round this problem of anchoring objects in the first line of a frame by putting the anchor in an empty zero-height paragraph, which I thought was brilliant .... except that I never figured out how to make a zero-height paragraph. Setting the leading to 0 didn't work so I gave up. Is there, in fact, a secret to this? -
7. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(Dave_Saunders) Oct 10, 2008 12:07 PM (in response to Pariah Burke)Setting the leading to zero ought to work (unless you're aware that it actually makes the paragraph 0.001 points tall and that's what you mean by "didn't work"). Are you sure you included the paragraph return when you set the leading (I'd have used a paragraph style to make sure).
Or were you thrown by the fact that the inline initially sits on the baseline so if you have Ascent for first baseline offset, it initially doesn't work until you pull the inline down to hang from the baseline.

8. Re: Questions/Issues with Anchored Objects?
(Nigel_Chapman) Oct 11, 2008 2:00 AM (in response to Pariah Burke)I had another go at making the paragraph that holds the anchor zero height. What I hadn't done was set the font size to 0.1pt. Without that, it was leaving enough height for the characters, even though the leading was 0. Which is not unreasonable, really.
I still can't make this work for custom anchor positions, though. Unfortunately, I don't have time to look at it any more just now, because of a deadline.
