2. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Matthew Laun Mar 25, 2009 1:19 PM (in response to MT.Freelance)The InDesign 6.0.1 update is not known to be affected by the issue documented in the thread that Peter references. However, it could have the same root cause, in which case, I'd very much like to know about it.
Please check to see if you can view the contents of this NTFS junction (a kind of symbolic link, or shortcut):
C:\ProgramData\Application Data
If the answer is yes, then it's possible that your ID 6.0.1 update is failing for the same reason. Please feel free to contact me directly if this is what you see, as I'd like to work with you to solve the problem, and communicate the broader scope to the relevant development teams hear at Adobe.
Sincerely,
Matthew -

6. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Per Berntsen Mar 26, 2009 1:20 PM (in response to MT.Freelance)The same thing happened to me - "failed to install" - but I'm using XP SP3. Makes no difference if I do a manual update. I should mention here that I did a succesful update on another computer running XP SP3. I have also updated Photoshop to 11.01 on both machines without any problems. -
7. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Matthew Laun Mar 27, 2009 6:46 AM (in response to MT.Freelance)Per,
The failure mode you're describing sounds like the updater is not finding the files in the expected state. It could be that simply running the installer and asking it to do a "repair" on InDesign would be enough to right things, and enable the update to run with success. However, I am meeting with a customer this evening to observe the failure on their system, and might get information from that which can help you and others. More early next week...

8. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Per Berntsen Mar 27, 2009 1:52 PM (in response to MT.Freelance)Matthew,
There is no option for doing a repair install, so I installed 6.0 on top of my existing installation, then ran the 6.01 update, which failed.
>the updater is not finding the files in the expected state
I have added an empty folder in Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Indesign CS4 called "noallcaps", which stops panel titles appearing in all caps.
Could that have anything to do with it? -
9. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Per Berntsen Mar 30, 2009 2:26 AM (in response to MT.Freelance)Matthew,
I deleted the noallcaps folder, and the update installed. Then I put the noallcaps folder back, and got my panel labels the way I want them.
However, the update does not solve my interface problems, could you please take look at this thread?

Matthew Laun Mar 30, 2009 6:54 AM (in response to MT.Freelance)Per,
Thanks for the tip about the noallcaps. I'll test that myself, and add it to the doc I'm creating for troubleshooting ID 6.0.1 updates.
Regarding the interface issue you have on the other thread, please see my recent post there:

11. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Per Berntsen Mar 30, 2009 10:40 AM (in response to MT.Freelance)Matthew,
I just realized (from looking at the screen shots in the other post) that the update on the other machine succeded even if the noallcaps folder was present. These two computers are very similar, but the other one is not running any antivirus or firewall software. Don't know if that's the reason, though. -
12. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Matthew Laun Mar 30, 2009 12:42 PM (in response to MT.Freelance)Yes, I just finished my test with the noallcaps in place and it worked fine.
What I found from working with Michael Trout last Friday was that his update was failing because one of the InDesign support files that the updater was going to replace was missing. We found it in the C:\ProgramData folder, which is where such files are held temporarily during the update. We restored the file and then the update worked fine. So I suspect the quick solution is to...
1) Open the [Product name][version][date].log.gz file that corresponds to the product you're updating. If ID is installed as part of the suite, this might appear as the Suite log file. Look at the most recent if you have more than one. Look at the end of the file and work your way up.
2) Find any errors that read like this: "Unable to locate file to patch at "C:\[...]"
3) Look for that file in C:\ProgramData and move it to the location mentioned in the log.
4) Repeat for any additional "Unable to locate..." errors in the log for that last update session.
The reason for the initial failure is going to require some help from the installer dev team to analyze the log I gathered from that first failure.
This will all be made into a public tech doc in the near future.

14. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
Anne Cowlin Apr 9, 2009 6:14 AM (in response to Matthew Laun)I have been trying to update to 6.0.1 for weeks. No success. I found the log.gz file as you suggested and opened in wordpad but the file is either encrypted or corrupt. The date and time of the file is when i originally installed InDesign. Nothing has been added either today or on previous attempts to update.
I have tried to attach the file but as it's not on your list of allowed types it may not come with the message, so here is a sample:

Thanks for the advice, what a dummy I was not to think of that!
I've been able to extract the file, but as I suspected, there was no new data from the recent update attempts.
Back to the drawing board.

rc2732 Apr 10, 2009 11:49 PM (in response to Matthew Laun)Matthew,
I am having the same problem as everyone else with this issue. The problem is, I am not as technically advanced as I need to be in order to make this correction. I have read over your post several times, and I can't seem to locate the "log.gz" file. As a matter of fact, I have search the C: drive, and I can't even find a directory named ProgramData Folder. Am I missing something here? Are these files to be found in my adobe CS4 Indesign folder?
Sorry to be a pain,
Thanks for any help you can provide,
Rick

18. Re: 6.0.1 Update Failed to Install
theagency Apr 28, 2009 3:21 PM (in response to MT.Freelance)Auto update keeps telling me there is an InDesign update ready to install and when I tell it to go ahead and install it fails. I have looked through this thread and have tried various suggestions and yet no joy.
The update file is AdobeInDesign6_0_1.zipon an XP SP3 machine.
Would be great if Adobe could solve this vexing problem.
