1. Re: Replace Selected Item
P Spier Jul 30, 2008 8:18 AM (in response to Gernot Hoffmann)Doesn't it remain unchecked after doing so once?

2. Re: Replace Selected Item
Gernot Hoffmann Jul 30, 2008 9:24 AM (in response to Gernot Hoffmann)No, as far as I remember it falls always back
to the default state 'Replace Selected Item'.
How strange - who wants to replace an object by
something different, considering the cropping
and scaling issues ?
Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann -
3. Re: Replace Selected Item
P Spier Jul 30, 2008 10:03 AM (in response to Gernot Hoffmann)Hmm, I just checked, and it seems to be a per session setting, i.e. if you turn it off once, it stays off until you restart ID. I think that might be a bug. :)

you're right. Stable per session. Cannot be
unchecked permanently.

Gernot Hoffmann Jul 31, 2008 3:30 AM (in response to Gernot Hoffmann)Peter,
yes it isn't a bug, it's more a missing
option. Please send a feature request.
My system is CS2, probably you tested it
on CS3.

Funny, I get what you're saying about the setting not "sticking," but your question surprises me a bit. I have plenty of instances in which I replace the selected object. Granted, it's most often with an alternate object of the same size. But in any event, I never deselect Replace Selected Object because when I don't want to, I just Place with nothing selected. -

BobLevine Jul 31, 2008 4:33 AM (in response to John Mensinger)You might want to try placing objects by dragging from Bridge.

10. Re: Replace Selected Item
P Spier Jul 31, 2008 4:36 AM (in response to Gernot Hoffmann)I also use it from time to time, but I believe the setting should behave the same as "show import options" above it. :)
It isn't of course a tragedy, either, if you happen to accidentally replace an image because you forgot to deselect. Ctrl-Z and you have the item restored and a loaded place cursor ready to go. I haven't checked how this works with text, however. I suspect it would cause problems if you are trying to place additional text into an existing frame at some point in a story, and I use inline graphics sop seldom that I have no idea what happens if you try to place an inline while that box is selected.
