Virtual Copy w/ detail of history

    jrsforums Community Member
Is it possible to make a VC where the copy hase the detail of the changes made to the original.

Currently, all the changes are in the copy, but the detailed history of changes is not there. This precludes making the same backward steps that one could do with the original.

      Thanks...John

The copy has its own history that starts when its created, but it doesn't inherit the history of the original

But it has the settings of the the "original"...which are the cumulative changes (if any) from the "imported original".

So, assuming primarily a 'RAW' image if the concept is an "unchanged negative", the VC should show the changes that have been made to the original imported RAW file.....or is my thinking faulty...???

Yes, it's faulty. The history is unimportant - little more than a log of what you've done. All that matters is the sliders' current settings, not "cumulative changes" - that's Photoshop OldSpeak.

Well, it is what it is...at least for now.

However, I do believe that the history is important. If, after you make a few changes, you decide to take a "branch", trying different alternatives, having the history on both would be important. Not only as history, but if the "branch" includes backing off a few steps before going forward with other changes.

I think the LR creators think the history is important...or they would npt provide it. I suspect that they assumed a VC would be made before any changes were made, so, therefore, did not provide the ability to copy the history when creating the VC...which I assume would be quite easy to do. I hope, in a future version, they add this ability.

Just use "snapshots" in these cases, if history is important for you.

"Just use "snapshots" in these cases, if history is important for you."

I guess it is an approach....but kinda convoluted. By that I mean, one could get all wrapped up in trying to remember what snapshots included what changes.

I am all for simpler solutions are better solutions.

So don't - try to think less about the changes, and focus on the sliders' values. If you do like working with snapshots, name them helpfully (you can also rename VCs - look for Copy Name)

Often I like how I've processed an image, and want to see how I did it (often, the question is: "which preset did I use as a starting point?"). With virtual copies, that information isn't available any more; you have to look at the editing history of the original AND the virtual copy. Too many steps and it's illogical anywy. A virtual copy should be just that - a copy, including the edit history.
