1. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Ramón G Castañeda Oct 6, 2008 12:58 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Ralph,
The first thing to investigate is whether Epson has updated drivers for your printer that are compatible with Leopard.
For instance, I have the older Epson 2200 and Epson will NOT bring out Leopard compatible drivers for that model, and that is just one of the many, many reasons I'm not touching Leopard with a ten-foot pole. -
2. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Allen Wicks Oct 6, 2008 1:54 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Personally I am still on 10.4.11 with my 3800, but 10.5x drivers do exist. First step with Epson printing anomalies is to download and install the appropriate driver, even if you currently have that same driver installed. Of course, repair Permissions before and after the installation.
10.4.11 rocks, but at this point there are many things that do not work with OS versions earlier that 10.5 (e.g. my upgraded graphics card), so one can have problems with either OS version. -
3. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Ramón G Castañeda Oct 6, 2008 2:31 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Allen,
I know you can find excuses and apologies for any new version of the Mac OS and for Apple at the drop of a hat, but the list of things I'd lose with Leopard is so long that we'd never finish discussing it. None of Leopard's features is worth a dime to me. Indeed, if Photoshop CS3 and/or CS4 ran on Panther, I'd go back in a second.
Not deriving any income from these endeavors any longer, which by definition excludes me from the rank of the pros, I see absolutely no need or incentive to leave Tiger in the next couple of years, and I honestly don't expect to live much longer than that. I've been putting overtime the last couple of years, as it is, way past my expiration date.
Now you go ahead and give us your spiel about how it's not prudent to expect to die. You always have some cockeyed reasoning for contradicting any suggestion anyone ever makes. Who knows, you might just be right. -

?? Au contraire, IMO it is prudent to expect to die; it is only a question of when...
> I know you can find excuses and apologies for any new version of the Mac OS...
I am hardly one who jumps to each new OS version. Did you not read my first sentence
i Personally I am still on 10.4.11
? And I know that you are aware that I just left the G4 tower a couple of months ago. However, when graphics folks are buying
i new
boxes, IMO it generally does make sense to go to strong versions of the latest stuff.
I am happy that my 2006 MP runs 10.4.11 and I will stay with 10.4.11 as long as is feasible in my workflow. However one of my primary apps (Aperture) already takes good advantage of advanced graphics, and it sounds like CS4 may too. I already own an advanced card but must bite 10.5 or above to run it, so at some point (perhaps 10.6) I may be forced by the performance of my apps into updating the OS. -
5. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Ralph Eisenberg Oct 6, 2008 10:16 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Thank you for your replies. I should have doubtless specified that the driver version listed in my thread title (v6.11) is intended for 10.5.5. I had previously re-set my printer settings, deleted the printer via the Print-Fax Preference pane, downloaded yet again the driver (although this is the version that I already had, for some reason in Europe it was released a bit earlier than in the States)repaired permissions, installed the driver, repaired permissions and .... no change. Let me say that I had to upgrade to MacIntel with the obligatory 10.5.5, and that I waited to do so well-beyond the last minute. I can live with these minor glitches I guess, although they are a real annoyance, since color management handled by CS3 and the printer's output are really impressive. But life would be easier if these problems were remedied. -
6. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Ralph Eisenberg Oct 9, 2008 1:26 AM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Would it be any help doing an "Archive and Install", re-install the OS and updates and then the driver? I can't bear to think of doing a clean install, indeed the OS has been so stable over the years that I'm not sure that I remember how to install many component features of my system. Curiously, the problem with the change of black ink primarily arises when I change from photo > matte black, but the problem with mistaken warnings of incorrectly set paper feed parameters arises with both directions of media change. -

(JeffN) Oct 9, 2008 6:43 AM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Ralph-
Have you tried contacting Epson Professional support. The 3800 falls in that grouping and Epson provides a bit more trouble shooting help that the consumer printers. You would file a support case with Epson via their web site. I have the same printer, about 1.5yrs old. Works very well, and have used the web support a few times.
here's a link to their support for the 3800

Ralph Eisenberg Oct 9, 2008 9:28 AM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)JeffN,
Thanks for your suggestion. Taking your advice, I contacted Epson support in 2 stages. First, I reached Epson France support (where I am located), which was not helpful, but this regrettably is nothing new. They were unfamiliar with the Mac OS. I then contacted Epson Support U.S.A, and I reached someone who was both knowledgeable and effective and willing to take the time to iron out the issues. Since heretofore I've only had aversive experiences with Epson France support on the very rare occasions that I've contacted them, my experience with Epson USA support came as quite a surprise. It is still too early to to be sure that the issues I've been having are resolved, although they would appear to be, I'm none the less grateful for your having directed me to Epson USA support. -
9. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
(Ashley_Voigt) Nov 12, 2008 8:47 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Dear Ralph,
I am having similar difficulty with my new-to-me but second-hand Epson 3800.
My daughter has an Intel Mac and I have a PPC Mac hooked up to the 3800 via ethernet router. We are both running OS 10.5.5. The latest driver in Australia for this printer is 6.10 which I have installed.
I predominantly use CS3 InDesign. When I print photo ink jet paper from InDesign off the Intel Mac the printer switches to Photo Black however when using the PPC the printer switches to Matt Black. Hence I get very different colours - a mess.
I noticed on another help site that you got some info from Epson regarding localisation that fixed your problem? Can you please tell me what that entailed and any other relevant info? I am going around the twist trying to get decent colour outputs and consistent colour between printers.
Thanks in anticipation. -
10. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Ralph Eisenberg Nov 12, 2008 11:46 PM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)One of the problems that I had had concerned apparently random switchings between the matte and photo black inks under 10.5+ MacIntel, whereas this had gone smoothly under 10.4.11 PPC as a function of media type. Thanks to the excellent help of Epson Support, USA (for their professional printers), it turned out that this was due to localization issues. My OS is in French but I had PS in International English (cheaper). What this led to was my PS print dialogue box in English and the Epson driver part in French. Not a good mix in 10.5.5 MacIntel. When I made sure that everything was in English, by eliminating the relevant localization files, the problem vanished. However, on occasion I do get erratic print sizes for some reason. I'm not sure that this will apply to your situation. Have you checked out Eric Chan's site devoted to the 3800? You might call Epson support USA as I did over the internet, they were extremely helpful and kind. -
11. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
(Ashley_Voigt) Nov 13, 2008 12:18 AM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)Dear Ralph,
Thank you for replying to my post.
It does not seem that I will solve my problem by localisation "rectification". I am in an all International environment. Hmm.
Do you use InDesign CS3 in a totally colour managed environment?
I just got a Colour Profile done for my Intel Mac machine from InDesign and it is 'less than perfect'. Very frustrating.
This colour expert suggests I set up my work flow as follows:
[Well if I was allowed to include snapshots of my screen they would appear here.]
The Printer Profile I am using in the Colour Management dialogue box is the profile provide by the Colour Expert.
How do you set things up please?
I had, in fact still have, an Epson 3000 that the Colour Expert profiled and gave me phenomenal colour accuracy up until OS 10.5.5 when the Epson driver became non-operational. I am so disappointed that I am having so much difficulty with the 3800.
I think there are Adobe v. Mac issues plus driver problems!!!
If you can shed any light on this, I would welcome it.
Thanks. -
12. Re: CS3, Mac OS 10.5.5, Epson 3800 Printing Problems (v6.11)
Was DYP Nov 13, 2008 3:38 AM (in response to Ralph Eisenberg)I did not see this mentioned here, but you do know don't you that unless you choose "Print as Bitmap" the monitor profile gets introduced into the prntflow when printing to an RGB printer from IDCS3 & 4. Unless your printer driver bypasses the Apple print process such as the "Fast Graphic Process" selection in the driver for in the Canon iPF series printers your are going to get the monitor profile into the mix unless you choose "Print as Bitmap" which is the way IDCS2 printed by default.
With the monitor profile being introduced into the printflow, different computers will not match each other, nor will ID match PS using the same paper/printer profile.
You can easily test this by changing the monitor profile and making a print with the different monitor profiles loaded.
To better understand what is going on with printing to RGB inkjets read this thread.

Yes, I have been ticking/checking "Print as Bitmap".
I have contacted Epson Pro Graphics Australia and am awaiting their response. I will keep you informed.
