1. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Ann Shelbourne Nov 7, 2008 11:01 PM (in response to Cindy-)I wonder how that errant JPEG was saved: Baseline Standard, Optimized, Progressive or JPEG 2000?
(The JPEG 2000 plug-in is no longer installed by default in CS4.)
Or was it shot in a camera as a JPEG?
You might want to try using Bridge-hosted ACR 5.1 to open it? -
2. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 7:17 AM (in response to Cindy-)Interesting. Bridge does see the file but it will not open it in PS. He must have saved it as jpeg 2000 or something like that as you suggested.
It probably is not a bug. -
3. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Buko. Nov 8, 2008 8:00 AM (in response to Cindy-)Just save it as a PSD and open it in CS4 -
4. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 8:31 AM (in response to Cindy-)I just resaved it from CS3 as a jpg and it opened. But if someone didn't have CS3 this is a potential problem. -
5. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Buko. Nov 8, 2008 8:52 AM (in response to Cindy-)>I just resaved it from CS3 as a jpg
you do know thats destructive right? Which is why I recommend saving as psd. -
6. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Ender) Nov 8, 2008 8:59 AM (in response to Cindy-)Yes you probably lost a pixel or two when you saved it as a jpeg again. But, since they are sending you a jpeg in the first place I'm going to take a guess that it's just so you can preview it.
Also, this issue is not consistent. If it were true that every time someone received a jpeg it didn't open in CS4, the forums would be flooded.
Odds are it's just saved with something strange that is tripping CS4 up (like an ICC profile). It could be 3rd party add-ons. Could be preferences. If you start seeing it happen more from this particular person but not from others, then it's probably a setting applied to the jpeg on her end. -
7. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Buko. Nov 8, 2008 9:02 AM (in response to Cindy-)I'd put the Jpeg 2000 plugin in and see if that's it.
or if you want you could send the jpeg to me and I'll take a look at it. the unsaved version of coarse. -
8. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 9:08 AM (in response to Cindy-)> you do know thats destructive right?
It was a copy and done as a curiosity. Let me see if I can find that plugin. -
9. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Ann Shelbourne Nov 8, 2008 9:24 AM (in response to Cindy-)>Bridge does see the file but it will not open it in PS.
Can you open it in ACR from Bridge CS4 and then Save it as a .psd directly out of ACR?
That is what I do with any JPEGs that need to be re-opened. -
10. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 10:56 AM (in response to Cindy-)> Can you open it in ACR from Bridge CS4 and then Save it as a .psd directly out of ACR?
Yes, I was able to do that. So that is how it would be solved with someone who does not have CS3. :) -
11. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Ender) Nov 8, 2008 11:04 AM (in response to Cindy-)Or they would just open it in Preview and save from there. -
12. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 11:32 AM (in response to Cindy-)> Or they would just open it in Preview and save from there.
Didn't work. Caused CS4 to hang just like the jpg did. -
13. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Ender) Nov 8, 2008 11:50 AM (in response to Cindy-)Right, I mean file>save as and save in a different location or with a different name.
If you save from Preview, its a whole new file. If PS continues to hang past that, then everything you save out of preview should be doing the exact same thing. -
14. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Ann Shelbourne Nov 8, 2008 11:58 AM (in response to Cindy-)> So that is how it would be solved with someone who does not have CS3.
Exactly!
All the more reason to use Bridge CS4 (plus ACR when appropriate) instead of the Finder for organising and opening files these days.
:) -
15. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Ender) Nov 8, 2008 12:08 PM (in response to Cindy-)Uhh... so that leaves the question:
Does every file saved from your preview not open in CS4? -
16. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 8, 2008 12:28 PM (in response to Cindy-)> Does every file saved from your preview not open in CS4?
No. It saves my other files just fine into another format that opens. It just does not correct the "bad" file like Bridge does. So Preview leaves it the same even with the change in extension.
> Right, I mean file>save as and save in a different location or with a different name.
Saving it as a psd file IS changing the name. -
17. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Ender) Nov 8, 2008 12:57 PM (in response to Cindy-)I see. That part wasn't specified. -
18. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Kathy_Guo) Nov 9, 2008 11:17 PM (in response to Cindy-)Cindy, hang is not a good sign. What is your OS? If it is 10.5.4 or earlier version, you could upgrade it to 10.5.5 and see if that fix the problem. If your OS is already 10.5.5, could you send the bad JPG file to Adobe? You could send the bug report to this link.

PeterK.. Nov 10, 2008 8:53 AM (in response to Cindy-)>Odds are it's just saved with something strange that is tripping CS4 up (like an ICC profile).
ICC profiles are not "strange." They are an essential part of managing colour correctly in Photoshop, and I doubt they would be the cause of the problem. It's not good to be scaring people away from ICC profiles as if they are something to be avoided. -
20. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 10, 2008 9:12 AM (in response to Cindy-)Kathy, I am OS 10.4.1. I do not want to upgrade to Leopard at this time.
I have not seen this happen with any other jpg so it is specific to this particular file. Opening it in CS3 and resaving it solves the problem as does opening it in Bridge. I doubt very seriously if it is anything to do with my system. I am problem free.
I may think about sending the bug report you suggested or I would be happy to send you the offending jpg if you will provide an email. -

It's not there Neil. -
23. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
(Phos±four_dots) Nov 10, 2008 11:35 AM (in response to Cindy-)And when Kathy says to "Send the JPG" make sure to ZIP/Archive the JPG before you attach it to an email so no further re-encoding changes or errors are introduced. -

Ramón G Castañeda Nov 10, 2008 4:19 PM (in response to Cindy-)Cindy,
I'm assuming OS 10.4.1 is a typo for 10.4.11. -
28. Re: Received jpg CS4 will not open
Cindy- Nov 10, 2008 4:46 PM (in response to Cindy-)10.4.11 is correct Ramon. -

I must say, "Thank you!" to you and all the other Adobe staff who have been stopping by the Forums recently.
I'm sure I speak for the others when I say that your presence here is very much appreciated!
