    New ATI driver and software

    Nick Decker Community Member
ATI users with CS4 problems should go to the ATI drivers page. There's new Catalyst software (8.11) and a new driver (8.55).

I've just downloaded it and will report back when I have it installed.

I didn't see anything in the release notes about PS CS4, just certain games that it improves. We shall see...

Balls! Not only does the new driver not help anything, I now cannot even use CS4!

The program opens with a warning "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements..."

I click OK on that, go to Prefs and turn OpenGL on. Try to open a file and get "The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occured in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program." Turning OpenGL off gives me the same situation.

Hopefully, rolling back to my previous driver will get me back to where I was.

Thanks A LOT, ATI. You've wasted about an hour of my day, so far.

To others, I hope this new driver might work for you, but buyer beware.

              But wait! There's more!

Rolling back to the previous driver gave me the same error, and I couldn't use CS4 at all. I finally did a System Restore to yesterday's settings and I'm back to at least being able to use the program.

ATI, shame on you. You are the suckiest!

Edit: BTW, I tried it just installing the new driver, and also the new driver with the new Catalyst Control software. Same disaster either way.

                  I'm using 8.11 with a 4850 and CS4 with no problems.

First, I the above driver install issues but maybe this may help.

8.11 driver package works great with my install of CS4 extended on vista ultimate 64 bit.

                    Turned off windows defender.

Downloaded drivers. Right clicked on icon then clicked Unlocked download then apply and checked the run as administrator box then ok. Then closed icon

Clicked on icon, choose uninstall drivers. Before I rebooted I used CCleaner. Rebooted

Then clicked on icon, chose install. When the install was complete then rebooted.

After computer rebooted I defragged the hard drive using Iobit smart defrag.

Clicked on CS4 and it started right up and did not crash. I have only played with a few photo's but the software is stable. There is no change in speed or any fix to some of the other problems posted. I will just live with it like I am now.

                    Suggestion:
I have posted this once before There is a free software tool called Driver Sweeper 1.5.5. This, after you uninstall your video drivers, will remove any lingering ATI and Nvidia stuff left on your computer.

Some ATI DLL remain. They cannot be deleted nor do they harm anything.

Sometimes the uninstall will leave stuff behind that will not mesh right with the new install. I have used this software several times due to driver and whatever conflict. Try at your own risk but I have not had any problems with this software.

Anyways, I hope this helps someone.

Well, this morning I was working in CS4 (with the old 8.10 Catalyst driver package installed). Had two small files open (maybe 6MB each). CS4 locked up and wouldn't respond. Couldn't use Ctrl+Alt+Delete or the Start button, so had to use the Reset button on my computer case.

I'm going back to CS3 until these issues get resolved, if they get resolved. I've spent far too much time on this already and just can't afford to spend more. My 30 days of Hell return eligibility have expired, so I guess I'm stuck with this bag-o-bugs.

                        Good luck, amigos.
