1. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
skeeze Nov 15, 2008 8:15 PM (in response to skeeze)Here is another bit of strange info. If I put the video in the timeline and choose to replace it with a After Effects Comp (i.e. using dynamic link), when the video goes into AE, it plays fine and then when I come back into PPro, it plays fine there also (the ae comp, not the original)..wt? -
2. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
akribie Nov 16, 2008 2:45 AM (in response to skeeze)Check CODEC with GSpot. If, as I suspect, it is MJPEG, then get the Morgan MJPEG CODEC and you should be able to run the AVI on the PPro CS4 timeline. -

(David_Zeno) Nov 16, 2008 9:41 AM (in response to skeeze)Make sure you have Quicktime installed, if you do, install the latest version and also install SP3, the latest version of quick time should fix this. -
4. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
skeeze Nov 16, 2008 2:18 PM (in response to skeeze)Thanks, I did check and you are right it is MJPEG, but GSpot reports that the MPEG codec is already installed for the file and AE recognizes it no problem. Should I install the other CODEC instead, or does CS4 want to use its own? -
5. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
juskocf Nov 17, 2008 5:59 AM (in response to skeeze)I was also able to play and edit MJPEG video taken by a Panasonic DC with PPro CS3. But with CS4, it will crash and has to close PPro. I guess CS4 no longer supports MJPEG. -

Bill Hunt Nov 17, 2008 8:37 AM (in response to skeeze)Both Morgan and Main Concept have MJPG CODECs that *seem* to work in most Adobe programs. What changes were made version to version, I do not know.
There could also be CODEC "Priority" issues in the Registry. There are utilities to reset these, but I don't have any links handy. Seems that Harm Millard listed a couple some time back.

7. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
akribie Nov 17, 2008 10:41 AM (in response to skeeze)I just installed the Morgan MJPEG CODEC and was immediately able to play Canon AVI footage on the CS4 timeline without needing to make any adjustments elsewhere.
Long free trial period means that there is no problem trying it yourself. -
8. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
skeeze Nov 17, 2008 7:14 PM (in response to skeeze)Well, it turns out hte Morgan MJPEG CODEC isn't supported on Vista x64:( What I just don't get is why bridge plays the file, AE plays it fine, and so can Quicktime...it is ONLY PPro that is having the problem. AARRRGGGGHHHH. -

fuaho Nov 28, 2008 6:59 AM (in response to skeeze)David,
you might try the LEAD MCMP/MJPEG codec.

10. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
skeeze Nov 29, 2008 9:12 PM (in response to skeeze)William,
That seems to work great...many thanks! It is a little annoying that I have to spend money on something that is so fundamental and should work with CS4 since it worked in CS3, but for $10, it will do nicely until Adobe gets it fixed.
Thanks again. -
11. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
skeeze Jan 14, 2009 6:42 PM (in response to skeeze)Well...spoke to soon, turns out it only works some of the time. I called Adobe and they say that they have known problems with MJPEG support and are working on the problem. I have found the easiest fix is to use Quicktime Pro ($29) and convert it to a .mov file and they work fine, just a little painful because you have to convert them one at a time. -

akribie Jan 15, 2009 3:11 AM (in response to skeeze)Have you tried the Morgan MJPEG CODEC? Seems to work for me in all versions of Premiere from 5 to CS4. -

No no, I have had like 8 mjpeg files converting at the same time with QT Pro.
Start QT-Player, then File Open and select file #1. That will open a new QT-Player. In the new player, start the conversion. Go back to the first player and open file #2, and yet another player opens. Now set that player to do a conversion. Then again, go back to the first player and open file #3, and so on, and on, and on.
A little more work than a batch-list, but no need to wait for every conversion before you start the next.
Quite another thing. If you have Photoshop Extended (CS3 or later), why not do the conversion in PS? Seems to me like QT Pro is built in to PS. I haven tried to make an Action yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if that worked.

14. Re: No more support for Canon Powershot Video?
Dag Norum Jan 15, 2009 3:55 AM (in response to skeeze)I had to try to record an Action in PS (CS3). I recorded the steps to convert a mjpeg to QT DV-AVI. Then I tested the Action on another mjpeg, and it worked fine.
Then it was simply to run a Batch and select my newly recorded Action, and then select a whole folder full of mjpeg files.
