1. Re: nVidia driver update seems to help stuttering playback...
mickkeay Jan 12, 2009 9:01 AM (in response to fuaho)Hi William - I have also just upped to 181.20 and it seems to have cured a problem I had with stills crashing CS4. (not absolutely sure yet - I am about to test in anger tonight) -

Thrill Media Jan 12, 2009 11:09 AM (in response to fuaho)Seems to work better with my 1700 as well. My timeline still blinks while playing but playback is fluid. Thanks for posting! -

Turn off your vista theme. -
4. Re: nVidia driver update seems to help stuttering playback...
(Mark_Weiss) Jan 13, 2009 8:56 PM (in response to fuaho)Interesting thread. I just downloaded the driver and installed it this evening.
It certainly improved things in some areas, although I cannot say that it made Premiere useable.
It did stop the 10-second GUI freeze-ups.
Video now plays with a very stuttery quality, until it hits an unrendered title overlay--then it smooths out and seems to play at full frame rate.
There are serious problems with the audio, however. Often there is no audio, or, shortly after playback begins, I get several loud bursts of white noise alternating at random in left/right channels. If I let it continue to play, I get a BSOD which states that a critical system process has stopped responding and Windows is being shut down to protect the system.
With this driver, Premiere CS4 is one small step closer to being usable, but still has a long way to go.
No problems noted in PhotoShop, but AfterEffects still crashes when OpenGL is enabled in AE. That's three nVidia driver updates I've done on this quad-core system, and all three of them are no good for OpenGL in AE. :( -

(tlc51369) Jan 13, 2009 9:09 PM (in response to fuaho)Sounds like you are having audio driver conflicts. -
6. Re: nVidia driver update seems to help stuttering playback...
(Mark_Weiss) Jan 13, 2009 11:55 PM (in response to fuaho)Before the video driver upgrade, the only thing that worked WAS the audio--I could hear the soundtrack, but the GUI was completely frozen. Now it's somewhat inverted.
I tried 2 different physical sound systems, the Auzentec card and the MotU 896. No matter which sound system I used, the white noise bursts occured.
This version of Premiere is really messed up. -

spreeni Jan 14, 2009 1:43 AM (in response to fuaho)I tried several drivers for my Quadro FX 1700, too. 181.20 is working faster but not as stable as 178.48. I gave the 185.20 driver a try (it's a beta or prebeta you only get in web, not from nvidia). I didn't expected much because it's a leaked driver. I was surprised that I had a faster speed (faster than 181.20) and no more crashes anymore. That's why I say for me 185.20 is the best working nvidia driver for CS4. -

Maybe try the mobo sound? -
9. Re: nVidia driver update seems to help stuttering playback...
(Mark_Weiss) Jan 14, 2009 11:37 PM (in response to fuaho)You mean enable the motherboard audio (if it has any) and disable the Auzentech and the MotU 896? I wonder if setting "do not use this device" in Device Manager really gets said device out of the picture. Perhaps physically removing the card may be called for. I'm not all that fond of the Auzentech card, despite it's platinum pricetag. I'm tempted to swap it for the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz cards that are in the retired workstations but have always served me well. -

I do.

Agreed. Drivers, too. -
11. Re: nVidia driver update seems to help stuttering playback...
(Mark_Weiss) Jan 15, 2009 10:55 AM (in response to fuaho)A thing of concern is that if Premiere Pro is incompatible with both the Auzentech AND the MotU 896, that does not bode well for Adobe's compatibility. The Motu 896 is standard equipment around here and has been for 5 years. Be damned if we're going to use crappy, noisy motherboard audio just to use Premiere... -

JSS1138 Jan 15, 2009 11:18 AM (in response to fuaho)May be worth a test, though. Just to see what happens.
