2. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Harm Millaard Jan 27, 2009 1:43 AM (in response to spreeni)No problems here with ATI with dual monitors, but I don't use full screen preview. I use an external monitor for that. -
3. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
spreeni Jan 27, 2009 2:02 AM (in response to spreeni)Harm, do you use your external monitor for a HD preview? If so, which hardware do you use?

4. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Harm Millaard Jan 27, 2009 2:15 AM (in response to spreeni)Not yet. Only SD for now. With HDV/EX I have to do without the external. -
5. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
spreeni Jan 27, 2009 3:18 AM (in response to spreeni)Thanks for the info, Harm. It seems your are at the same point than me. Did you hear something about motu v4hd (external firewire device for hd/sd preview)? I didn't find anyone who is using it under Premiere pro.

6. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Harm Millaard Jan 27, 2009 3:34 AM (in response to spreeni)Pretty costly is what I heard. Therefore I have not looked into that yet. With the current economic situation and a couple of sizable investments for a top of the bill PC, HDTV and an EX3 including accessories, plus all the upgrades of software, I will for the time being leave it at that. It is mainly a hobby for me. -
7. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
(poof) Jan 27, 2009 12:56 PM (in response to spreeni)My ati 1950x BSOD's sometimes when using adobes software (and occasionally games). I got a dual screen setup, DVI + VGA. Its really a driver issue, but ill probably go with nvidia next time cause ati isnt very good with maintaining drivers, and nvidia is much more supported. -

Sorry, did I hear you correctly? ATI is very punctual with MONTHLY updates, whereas nVidia is a matter of wait and see. It surely looks the other way around.
Your 1950 giving you BSOD's is surely not (only) a matter of drivers. It must be a combination of factors, because I for one can't remember seeing a single BSOD caused by ATI for over a year. Maybe if you want to look closer into this matter follow the hints in the top page of the forum "How to ..." and post your problem in a new thread. -
9. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
JSS1138 Jan 27, 2009 2:27 PM (in response to spreeni)I have to agree with Harm on this one. ATI comes out with more driver updates than I can keep up with. -
10. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Jeff Bellune Jan 27, 2009 4:09 PM (in response to spreeni)The jury is still out over here. I used 2 different ATI cards over the course of 6+ years with very few problems, and now I have a top-end (?) Nvidia card - the GTX 280. I've had some minor issues with a few apps, but I can't say if the Nvidia card is involved, or if it's just Vista, 64-bit, or a whole host of other changes. Time will tell.
One thing Nvidia has all over ATI is the driver update process. It is completely painless. I rarely, if ever, updated my ATI drivers because the update process was so painful and time-consuming. Uninstall existing driver. Reboot. Install new driver. Reboot. Put your desktop back together like Humpty Dumpty after the update.
With Nvidia, I launch the installer, wait for it to finish, reboot, and I'm done. No muss, no fuss. -

I just updated my ATI driver to the 9.01 version, and this is a practice I have been using for several years without any adverse effects, I just run the update, it reboots and you are ready to go. No uninstall or intermediate reboots. I know that ATI advises you to uninstall but I'm obstinate and never do that and never had a problem. This, BTW, is the first update of 2009 and is rather late. Usually it appears around mid month. -
12. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
JSS1138 Jan 29, 2009 8:33 AM (in response to spreeni)That's interesting data, Harm. I've always used the same process Jeff laid out, and it really is a pain in the ***. -
13. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Harm Millaard Jan 29, 2009 8:43 AM (in response to spreeni)One thing to keep in mind, all I use is the driver, never the Catalyst Control Center, so my workflow may cause problems if you use CCC. I don't know how my workflow would work with CCC. -

JSS1138 Jan 29, 2009 8:44 AM (in response to spreeni)Also good to know. -
15. Re: Do ATI Display adapters work better than NVIDIA?
Jeff Bellune Jan 29, 2009 8:46 AM (in response to spreeni)I also never used the CCC - it always seemed to be just so much bloatware.
