try a different pdf. This one is either protected or doesn't have copyable text.
I'm having a similar problem, using Reader 8.1.2.
I am able to select text, but when I paste it into MS Word "Would the program operate safely" turns into "_____________________________#. Pasting the same thing here or into Notepad gives: "#. (In both cases the quotation mark at the start is part of the copied text, not added by me. The full stop at the end is mine.)
The PDF security properties show that copying is allowed. Any suggestions?
I meet the same problem too. With acroread7, I can select a word and my system clipboard show the content that I just selected. But the acroread8 dosn't do the right thing. when I start acroread8 and select a word for the first time, the word can show in the clipboard. But then I select another one, the clipboard's content is still the one that i just first selected, new words can not be added,So i think it is the software bug,is anyone can fix this, please help.
It would be nice for someone from Adobe to answer this. But what do we come to expect....nothing
What a pile of sh!te adobe reader really has become. From a simple quick program it has grown into a behemoth that is slow and has far far too much security in it for the average user

If you want an answer from Adobe, call Adobe.
This is a user to user forum.
I AM TRYING TO FILL IN A MO FORM AND ADOBE 8 WON'T FILL IN THE FORM. I HIT HILIGHT. NOTHING HAPPENS.
I have Adobe 8 and am trying to fill in a MO form. will not let me type text... Why?
In order to fill out a form using Reader, the creator of the form would have had to add what are called fillable form fields. Sounds like they didn't do that.
In other words, it may look like a form but Reader doesn't know it is one unless the creator adds a few items.
