    AE CS4 Crashes

I have been working very happily for two years in CS3, post an indi film with a lot of CGI over live action. Its a HD 1920 x 1080 project. I have never had a problem. I thought I would try CS4 to see if I get better use of my multi processor setup. It works very well especially the preview but I get random crashes. I save often and auto save every ten minutes so nothing gets lost except the last bit of work. I also get crashes in Premier CS4 which I have abandoned for the moment. The last crash in AE was caused by a simple levels filter on a background layer that I had dimmed in order to do some complex masking. I had been working for a couple of hours with no problem and was just scrubbing through slowly looking for artifacts when it crashed.
I use a HP 8400 running in Vista x64 with two dual Xeon 5150 processors with 8 gig RAM separate system drive and four 1.5TB HD, and an INVIDIA Quadro FX1500 video card. Its a dedicated editing and compositing system and was built for the job.

Im getting crashes as well with AE CS4.

My crash is a little different though.

My crash happens when I attempt to scale my media after dragging it out of the library and placing it on the stage area. Does not matter if it is a .Jpeg, .Avi, or any other media type. I scale and I get a crash automatic everytime. Very bad and frustrating. I have reverted back to AE cs3 for the time being.

To report bugs, send a detailed bug report (including information about the version number of your software, some details about your computer, et cetera) to aebugs@adobe.com. You can also submit bugs using this form, if it's more convenient.

Have you called Adobe Technical Support?

You can contact Adobe Technical Support for help with issues like this. You are entitled to a certain number of free calls for "installation issues, basic usage questions, and troubleshooting unexpected behavior for documented features".

Turn off OpenGL and use Adaptive Resolution. This pretty clearly sounds like an inability to perform pixel transform operations on your "texture" in that mode. Have you updated your graphics driver to the latest version available for your graphics card.

What footage do you use? There have been considerable changes to handling procedures for some formats piped through MediaCore and to accomodate XDCAM, AVCHD and that sort of thing, so this may be causing issues. If it's possible, I would attempt to re-capture the footage natively in PPro CS4 (assuming you still have the original capture project and this is just a round of coffee while capturing from a deck...). This might make the issues go away due to more compliant streams.

Capture causes the most problems. Premier CS4 usually crashes when I press capture sometimes while I am still setting it up. CS3 still works perfectly. I am working with a combination of 3DS Max generated still images @ 50 fps and HDV footage. I have all the original tapes but there is about 30 hrs of footage and even if I drank coffee that would be rather a long coffee break. I have more than one work station. They have slightly different specs but all have problems with CS4.

Mmh, I'm sorry to hear that. You could possibly try to clean out the media caches in both programs and have them re-conform/ re-index the HDV stuff, maybe that will at least slightly improve matters...

I made a clean install of Vista and upgraded all the drivers before installing any software so there were no caches when I started. Doing it now made no difference. But thanks anyway. CS4 has some great feature but is still too buggy for me to use yet.

CS4 has been stable for me on both Windows and OS X for several months. Please consider calling support to get help figuring out what it is about your system that causes these problems.

I am using 9.0.1. The last error message 150:30 told me I must restart my computer. All I was doing was moving a solid.
Support ! You must be joking. If I was in the US that might help but I'm in New Zealand. I try calling occasionally. My systems are very stable. They are rock solid with CS3. We do have Macs and I will try CS4 on one of them.

Ray, could you provide the full gist of your error messages? The 150 :: xx numbers are usually tied to conflicts with other Adobe components, 100 :: xx and 120 :: xx would point to issues with activation/ validation. I'm not sure, but it definitely begins to feel like the problems come from somewhere else, not AE and Premiere...

I can hardly ever get through to Adobe NZ which is not in NZ but covers Asia Pacific. I have emailed them.

If there was a problem with the CS4 install you would have thought that it would show up in the other software too not just in Premier and AE. I have tried all of them in CS4 with no problems. I also use 3DS Max which runs very happily. The errors I get are all very different. I just had a crash when I tried a render. It seems this time it didn't like a trapcode plug-in. One that I have used in all previous renders. That crash did produce an error report which I sent on. Sometimes the software just quits and there is nothing to explain what happened. If I get anything I will post it.

                                            1. Sounds like a QuickTime problem. Please follow the trouble-shooting steps I've collected here:

                                            2. Sounds like an email won't help you, you need someone that can look at your setup and figure out what's wrong.

I don't use quicktime. Useful insights though I am working through them. An expert now that would be very nice. I live in paradise but its a bit isolated, its a 2 hour drive over the mountains to the nearest town with an airport and then an hour by plane to the city. I do all my own builds and maintenance. I get by.

Even though you may not use QuickTime in your project, it still needs to be installed for AE to work properly.

The expert I was referring to was Adobe's technical support experts. Please give them a call if reinstalling QuickTime doesn't help.

Hum no difference but having spent some time looking at the performance monitor it appears to be a Vista memory issue. I have enough RAM, 8 GB, and have minimized everything I can in Vista. Minimizing DEP seemed to solve most of the problem. Vista still tries to close AE randomly but at least now AE keeps going once I have closed the dialogue box.
