1. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
Mylenium Jun 21, 2008 7:11 AM (in response to gold987987987)Have you checked to clean out the MediaCaches and trash the prefs? Using a Premiere project certainly is a feasible workaround if all else fails, but I would still assume you could revivie AE with other methods such as the mentioned ones...

gold987987987 Jun 21, 2008 10:30 AM (in response to gold987987987)I've tried every trick in the book. I must be overlooking something but I have no idea what it could be. -
3. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
(Christopher_Hurton) Jun 30, 2008 7:24 AM (in response to gold987987987)I have the SAME PROBLEM. My OS crashes when I want to import files like: .mpeg, .avi, .mov, .jpeg, etc...
I had Windows Vista Home Premium with this issue, after I format ..............I have Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1) NOW , and still have the problem!!! is a After Effects CS3 issue with Vista..?
My machine features (HP dv6626US):
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bits
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.5 Ghz
2 GB DRR2 (667 mhz)
160 Hard Disk
Video card Intel X3100 up to 388 MB (I can run games like COD2, Battlefield 2, Quake 4 in full graphics, Aero Windows Vista, etc....and programs like Adobe Premiere and entire CS3 packet without throubles).
When I open up an example project (that cotains .mov videos and images) I don't have one single problem! I can view all perfect, the problem is only when I want to IMPORT (I can EXPORT good too)
Please help me, Thank you.
Christopher
P.S. I have already install the update 8.0.2, but the problem is still there... -

gold987987987 Jun 30, 2008 8:56 AM (in response to gold987987987)What a sec, did you say your OS crashes or AE crashes? For me, AE crashes, my OS remains stable. -
6. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
Mylenium Jul 1, 2008 1:04 AM (in response to gold987987987)Scott, what version of Quicktime do you use? do you use tools such as Mediaplayer Classic, VLC or QT Alternative? They sometimes bend CoDecs and then everything falls apart. As a minor, I would look into the hardware acceleration settings of QT (set it to "GDI only") and see if it brings any improvements. also remove any additional CoDec packs you may have installed. Beyond that I can only repeat the same sermon again:
- trash the prefs (C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Application Data\Adaobe\After Effects\8.0)
- disable OpenGL in the prefs
- alternatively remove the AE_OpenGL.AEX plugin (C:\Program Files\Adobe\After Effects CS3\Support Files\Plug-Ins\Extensions)
- reset the graphics card configuration to its factory defaults (in case it is set to some optimized games config or something)
To Christopher: Diasable OpenGL entirely. At this point, AE does not support any intel chipset/ graphics controlelr properly. You will have to do without it, even if it seems inconvenient and wil lmake some things slower.

8. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
gold987987987 Jul 1, 2008 7:49 AM (in response to gold987987987)Right now I'm running QT Pro 7.3.1. I downgraded to 7.3.1 because Premiere has some issues with the newer 7.4 versions. Not sure about the newer 7.5 version, has anyone tried it yet with Premiere???
I don't have any other codecs installed on my system, it's a very clean machine. I'll try some of your suggestions and let you know.
Thanks, -
9. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
Mylenium Jul 2, 2008 10:50 AM (in response to gold987987987)Can't say much about it. I'm using Premiere once a month or so to capture my homemade HDV footage and that's about it. QT 7.5 so far seems reliable on systems I have installed it (Mac, Win XP), but your mileage may vary...

10. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
(Victor_Chavez) Aug 2, 2008 8:42 AM (in response to gold987987987)Okay, so i have the same problem as ScottGold (correct me if im wrong). Well basicaly i try to import a file or mutliple of files to Adobe After Effects CS3, but what happens is that after choosing a spcified file (picture or video) and pressing open, it loads for a sec and crashes. Then a messege pops up and says:
Adobe After Effects CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I've tried the solutions Mylenium suggested but it still happens. Any other solutions to this problem? -

(ab_c) Aug 10, 2008 8:33 PM (in response to gold987987987)Brilliant Mate!!! You just saved me a lot of money. Cheers to your efforts. Why is it that AE has many bugs, but Premiere has virtually none? -

Mylenium Aug 11, 2008 11:58 AM (in response to gold987987987)>Why is it that AE has many bugs, but Premiere has virtually none?
Apples and Oranges. Premiere certainly has a lot of bugs (even my "simple" FireWire captures sometimes go terribly wrong), but since you may be using an entirely different set of functions and avoid some more elaborate techniques (for which you move to AE), you may never encounter them. Other users certainly might report other things. Also do not forget that editing programs in general only work on some fixed resolutions and color depths and it is much more easy to optimize the hell out of such routines and work your way around bugs where on the other hand in a fully open system such as AE presents you may be able to prevent one issue only at the cost of opening another hole... ;-) In any case - as they say: Your mileage may vary.

I'd bet you have a bunch of 3rd party codec packs installed. They are infamous for causing problems.

gold987987987 Sep 23, 2008 7:41 AM (in response to gold987987987)Yep, I've done everything there except clean up my codecs. Does anyone know where they are located and how to best clean house?
Thanks, -

You uninstall them via your "Add or Remove Programs" panel, especially when they are Windows CoDecs that are merely a set of additional DLLs and registry keys. Quicktime CoDecs are also safe to delete manually (*.qtx) from either your system directory (Windows/System32) or the QT program directory.

gold987987987 Sep 23, 2008 10:47 AM (in response to gold987987987)Which ones should I delete, theres a million of these things. How do I know which ones are causing conflicts. Are there known bad pairs or relationships?
Thanks for all your help. -
20. Re: AE crashes on import of anything
Mylenium Sep 24, 2008 1:57 AM (in response to gold987987987)In terms of external CoDecs: Remove them all. Known conflicts exist with pretty much anything from XviD to DivX. Common baddies are the K-Lite CoDec pack, FF CoDec pack as well as some versions of DivX that get installed with tools like Winamp. If you can't remember having consciously installed any of that stuff, then maybe provide screenshots of the list or let a friend of yours have a look.
