    Editing Transcoded Assets in Premiere

I want to split this topic off from this thread:

First post will be Kevin's followed by all replies to him.

        Hi,

I don't use chapter markers from PP and I see the opposite problem.

I have a timeline in Encore with 15 chapter markers all settup where I want them, I made a change to the video asset in PP and Encore detected this and set it as needing transcoding again. But the changes were not reflected in the Encore timeline and I had to delete the video asset which also deleted all the chapter markers (this did not happen in V1.0.1). When I dragged the video asset back to the timeline I had to re enter all the chapter markers again.

            Kevin,

If you do the Edit Original thing and the avi file has already been transcoded, you need to do a Transcode Now on the changed asset instead of deleting the asset from the timeline. Once the changed asset is transcoded, it will update in the timeline.

              Jeff,

Option greyed out and set to none in PP version 1.0, so I cannot use the edit original in Encore V2.0. If I ever see this again I'll try retranscoding anyway, just seemed safer my way instead of waiting another two hours to see what happened after transcoding!!!

And just to clarify: what Kevin is seeing is FAD for Encore 2.0. Once a clip is deleted, chapter markers over it are also deleted. Unfortunately, PPro 1.0 does not export chapter markers to AVI, so that's why the chapters are gone. The solution to that problem would be either to export MPEG-2 from PPro, with named chapter markers, or update to PPro 1.5 or later, which supports AVI chapter marker export.

                  Joe,

I only deleted the video asset from the Encore timeline as I could not see the new PP changes made in the monitor or preview windows. From what Jeff said earlier I believe I was seeing the old transcoded version and not the new avi.

                  Is this FAD ?

or should I have reverted to original in Encore before changing the AVI in PP ?

                  Regards,

                  Kevin

                    >Kevin, if you replace an asset with a new one, the transcoded version should revert to original automatically.

                    Joe,

Are we still talking about Edit Original or are you describing the behavior of the Replace Asset command?

In my tests earlier today, I saw the same behavior as Kevin (no automatic update in timeline). The changed/updated asset does appear in the Project Panel as untranscoded.

Sorry, things are getting confused now (probably just with me, but separate threads might be clearer, I think).

I think I understand what Kevin is reporting now: transcoded asset remains in the timeline after editing the original asset. I'll check on that.

                        Joe,

I did not use Encore to replace the asset in any way.......

I had built a DVD of a Junior football league cup final and decided to add a team score box in the top left corner AKA the BBC.......

Anyway all looked good in Premiere on 14" Sony reference monitor, all looked good in Encore preview 4" monitor, burnt a disk and found the score font was unreadable on 32" widescreen TV.

So I simply went to photoshop and made the font larger, into PP which picked up the modified .png file, exported another avi from PP,
went into Encore which said the avi needed to be transcoded again, but when I viewed the timeline it still showed the old small font score.

I believe that is normal Kevin. The timeline won't update until the re-transcoding is completed. If you build a new disk, it should re-transcode and build the disk correctly. Or to be sure, you can do a "transcode now" and check it. The video has been properly updating for me - it's only the chapter markers that have been wonky. It can't burn a DVD with the wrong video since the transcoded video is overwritten by re-transcoding. If you still show the old video after re-transcoding, or changing the AVI file doesn't automatically revert back to original, then maybe you saved from Premiere under a different name or to a different folder?

I don't believe that what Kevin is seeing is correct behavior. I've been able to reproduce it, and the only way to update the timeline is to delete the clip, and then drag it in once more.

                              Madmartian,

Yes, I now think that if I had just re transcoded the changes would have burnt to disk, coming from V1 I suppose I am used to seeing the changes immediately without transcoding and was unnerved by the fact that I was seeing an out of date asset.

Kevin, if you replace an asset with a new one, the transcoded version should revert to original automatically. You're positive you're not seeing this behavior? If it is not for you, can you provide the steps to reproduce the problem?

Kevin, the same issue you are reporting occurs in Encore 1.5. I want to test it against Encore 1.0.1, then weigh in again.

                                    Joe,

Here is a summary of what I am seeing:

                                    1. Create avi asset in PPro. Exit PPro after saving project.
                                    2. Import PPro avi asset into Encore.
                                    3. Create new Encore timeline using avi asset.
                                    4. Transcode Now on avi asset.
                                    5. Save Encore project and exit Encore.
                                    6. Open PPro and modify original clip. Save as avi by overwriting original avi asset. Save project and exit PPro.
                                    7. Open Encore project again.
                                    8. Observe that asset is updated in Project panel, but not in timeline or in Monitor panel. Asset shows as untranscoded (as expected) in Project panel.
                                    9. Do a Transcode Now on updated asset in Project panel. Observe Progress panel open during transcode.
                                    10. When transcode is finished, Project panel and Monitor panel are updated appropriately. Timeline panel is not updated.
                                    11. Close Progress panel and make Timeline panel active.
                                    12. Observe Timeline panel update appropriately, except for the last thumbnail image in timeline, which does not update at all.

This works for Edit Original, no Edit Original, PPro Project link embedded or no link embedded.

I used a B&W filter in PPro to graphically demonstrate the changes/updates.

I've tested Kevin's scenario in several versions of Encore, and the transcoded version of the asset remains displayed in the timeine monitor window in versions 2.0, 1.5.1, and 1.0.1.

If you close, then reopen the timeline in versions 1.5 and 1.0.1, the asset updates correctly. However, it does not in Encore 2.0.

With this particular workflow, I would recommend that you export the AVI under another name, then use Replace Asset to update in the timeline.

P.S. After reading Jeff's test, I would recommend that as a better workaround.
