1. Re: Indesign CS4 crashes on UNDO
Michael Witherell Apr 13, 2009 12:53 PM (in response to marcopperman)There was a undo bug for a while, but patches should have cured that. You appear to be current on OS an InDesign patches. Next, you could try deleting preferences and restarting the application. Or equally suspect would be a bad font. Font Doctor should be able to investigate that possibility. Many say that the Suitcase auto-activation plug-ins should be uninstalled because it proves to be perennially problematic.

Sorry I don't have any solid advice, but I have had many problems with suitcase in the past...

3. Re: Indesign CS4 crashes on UNDO
marcopperman Apr 13, 2009 2:06 PM (in response to zeroskillz)The Suitcase plug-in worked fine in CS3... so I wouldn't have suspected it now. Of course, Suitcase and of course ID updated to new versions.
I have reset preferences, no dice.
I've seen evidence in the forums that users of Flash and Photoshop CS4 on Mac have a repeatable and constant UNDO crash. There are two forum posts related to this. No mention of whether Suitcase is involved, however. But there's no auto-activate product for those apps, so I suspect there's a lower-level issue central to the common Suite files and apps.

marcopperman May 7, 2009 6:56 AM (in response to marcopperman)Well, the Indesign 6.0.2 update did not solve my crash on undo problem.

P Spier May 7, 2009 7:03 AM (in response to marcopperman)Did you try disabling the Suitcase plugin? Just because it worked in CS3 doesn't mean it still does. Like DYP, I had many a bad experience with Suitcase in the past and personally wouldn't put it on any system I own.

6. Re: Indesign CS4 crashes on UNDO
marcopperman May 7, 2009 7:32 AM (in response to P Spier)Thanks for the reply, but SF2 isn't the culprit.
My Suitcase Fusion 2 plugins are disabled (I went from the expired SF2 trial to purchasing it with a week's delay and have not re-enabled them yet.) I have seen absolutely no difference in the frequency of the UNDO crash (though have CERTAINLY spent far more time manually activating fonts). I can count on 3-5 crashes per hour in heavy use of INDD.
Someone suggested font corruption. As best I can tell, I'm working with clean fonts. I run Font Doctor fairly regularly.
IMO, Suitcase now gets a bad rap from much earlier versions (which were buggy, esp. under OS 9.) And in this case, the long-perpetuated FUD around it have nothing to do with my problem.
I surely wish, too, Adobe didn't isolate itself so much from resolving issues like this with customers. I can find almost nowhere that seems to be monitored by them to send crashlogs to, discuss the issue, and get some "official" ideas. Unless, of course, I want to spend a lot of money on support cases.

7. Re: Indesign CS4 crashes on UNDO
marcopperman May 7, 2009 7:42 AM (in response to marcopperman)I am starting to notice the UNDO crashes tend to relate to placing an object (graphic) and then hitting undo. But that's not always the case.

P Spier May 7, 2009 7:49 AM (in response to marcopperman)Do you have any other 3rd party plugins installed?

marcopperman May 7, 2009 8:00 AM (in response to P Spier)Naw, just Suitcase (currently disabled).

10. Re: Indesign CS4 crashes on UNDO
marcopperman May 15, 2009 7:41 AM (in response to marcopperman)I solved my issue.
The culprit was a corrupt file in the Indesign preferences directory of my user Library:
PlugInConfig.txt
What sucks is that Indesign's rebuild-preferences command did not touch this file, and for me removing the whole Indesign preferences folder (a troubleshooting step I tried) caused Indesign to crash immediately on launch. So, I started removing contents of the Indesign preferences folder.
