New CPD File - 100s of broken links

I'm using RoboHelp 8 and my CPD file keeps getting bigger and bigger (~16,000KB). If I delete it and open the .xpj file, the CPD is smaller (~1,800KB), but 100s of links are broken.

I tried selecting the Options > General > Clear project cache (.cpd) before opening any project setting, but the same thing happens.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Debbie

I justed wanted to add that by broken links I meant that in the Project Manager under the "Broken Link" folder, there are 100s of .html files that need to be restored.

Deleting the CPD file should not on its own create broken links. Were you doing any moving / renaming / deleting of files beforehand?

I did move the files off of the network, which did not help the problem.

I then moved it back on the network.

Arrrrgh! The "N" word of which we do not speak

Don't ever run RH off the network. The CPD file is a cached version of an Access database that are prone to all sorts of issues when open on a network drive. In the worst case scenario this can mean a corrupt file rendering your project next to useless. Always run your RH source on a local drive and backup to a network. If you do this you will hopefully find your broken links disappear. If not, post back and we'll take things from there.

Another thing to check is that the path to these HTM files is relative (e.g. foldername\topic.htm) rather than absolute (e.g. C:\foldername\topic.htm). Are the broken links, links to other topics in the same project - in which case they will be realtive if you have added them correctly - or to other HTM files external to the project (e.g in another CHM). In this later case, it is good practice to use relative paths to ensure the link works no matter where the help file is placed.

I removed the .xpj file as well as the .cpd file and then opened the

project via the .hhp file and now there are no broken links.

This worked both on the network and on the local directory.

Thanks,

Debbie

OK but if you insist on working across a network you are asking for trouble. Think of it as playing Russian Roulette. Eventually your luck will run out. Your choice.

I've worked on the network for the last 6 years with RoboHelp 6 and never

had a problem, but I will look into figuring out a way to work on a local

drive. There are various reasons why the network works better for us.

Just as an addendum to my last email, the only problem I had after opening

the project via the HHP file, was that the conditional tags were missing. I

reentered the names of the tags and it worked out after that.

That's what everyone says when things go wrong. As I said, it works whilst your luck is in. Working off your local drive is as easy as creating a C:\Source directory and copying/pasting the source there.
