1. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Joe Bowden May 10, 2009 6:28 PM (in response to scottymo15)Encore doesn't import PPro projects - it imports PPro sequences via Dynamic Link. It appears in Encore as an asset, that normally would be put into a timeline.
You do all of your DVD authoring in Encore - you can set any object (menu, timeline, slideshow, playlist, etc.) to First Play. From there, you can quickly link objects to other objects via end actions or menu button links.

2. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Bill Hunt May 11, 2009 5:40 PM (in response to Joe Bowden)Jbowden's reply is spot on for Encore, and you can do your Project Importing in PrPro, as you suggested. You can have many Sequences and can Import your other Projects. Note: when you Import a Project into another, you will get a Bin structure for this Imported Project. You will need to open the main Bin and locate that Project's Timeline(s). A Dbl-click will then Open that/those Timeline(s). This is a common practice in PrPro, and is especially useful if one is editing each Project, one at a time, or having another editor do work on part of a much larger Project. If you get stuck on any of this, just post to the PrPro CS4 forum.
Good luck,
Hunt

3. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
scottymo15 May 12, 2009 12:24 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)I will for sure be in that forum. So just to clear things up for me.
I have done the dynamic link thing and it brings in my videos as Sequences/timelines like you guys said.
The problem i was having is when I opened a different project in Ppro, i would go to dynamic link and it would open a different encore screen. It would not import into the current encore project i was working on.
Can I not do a dynamic link for the second, third, and 4th projects I want to bring into Encore with my first project? Maybe that is my problem.....but i couldn't figure out how else to import these projects other than the dynamic link button.
I will continue to play around with it, and will look for the bins you have told me about.
If there is anymore help you could give, i would appreciate.
thanks a ton.

4. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Joe Bowden May 12, 2009 1:38 PM (in response to scottymo15)Sequences are part of a project in Premiere. Dynamic Link allows you to open a sequence from Premiere, use it in Encore, and then later make changes with it in Premiere and have them immediately update in Encore. As far as I know, Premiere, like Encore, can have only a single project opened at a time.
So...I think perhaps(?) that all of the sequences you bring into an Encore project must be from the same Premiere project?
The whole point of Dynamic Link is to keep working on the asset in the parent application, such as Premiere or After Effects - tweak it there, and go back to Encore and it's updated.
If you want the freedom of using assets regardless of whether Premiere is running or not, export a video file. Encore likes AVI, MOV, MPEG-2 for DVD/Blu-ray or H.264 for Blu-ray.

5. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Jeff Bellune May 12, 2009 2:07 PM (in response to Joe Bowden)Actually, Dynamic Link imports a Pr sequence into En as an asset, so you can have as many sequences from as many Pr projects as you want. (Within reason, of course!) Typically, though, most users will have the sequences all in one project. I can imagine that stuff like canned studio logos would be the exception
Once you transcode a linked sequence, either manually or by building your project, you have to Revert to Original if you want changes made in the linked sequence to show up in En.

6. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Joe Bowden May 12, 2009 2:14 PM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff, I think you're right.
I remember now back in Encore 2.0/CS3 that opening a project AE dynamically-linked comps with would start a "headless" version of After Effects running in the background handling the comp. Probably the same thing happens with sequences Premiere in CS4.
Sorry for the wrong turn!

7. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Jeff Bellune May 12, 2009 2:26 PM (in response to Joe Bowden)And the Premiere team came up with a really cool name for their
background process:
PProHeadless.exe
Whoa! How did they ever come up with that one? :-D

8. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
scottymo15 May 15, 2009 3:01 PM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Ok, so I have a project with 3 sequences in it, and I have my first sequence selected and I did the dynamic link to Encore. It worked great. My other 2 sequences from that same project did not get sent over to Encore.
I can't figure out how to get them there. I went to Import as Asset in Encore, and it wouldn't find my Sequences....I didn't think it would, but how do i get my other sequences into Encore. The other thing I tried was to select my other sequence and dynamic link it....but when i did that, it was going to close my current encore project and open another one.
Please help. :]

9. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Bill Hunt May 15, 2009 3:47 PM (in response to scottymo15)That is an interesting problem. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue, using DL between PrPro & En. I'm sure that Jeff Bellune or Jbowden will have an answer for you soon.
In the meantime, you've got your En Project with one Sequence in it. You've got two other Sequences sitting in PrPro, ready to go. If you need to get the Project done, you can always Export each Sequence as elemental streams, i.e. DV-AVI Video-only, and PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, or AC3 Audio-only. These can then be Imported into your existing En Project. Yes, this is the "old way," of doing things, but should get you by, until the answer on DL and multiple Sequences comes.
Good luck, and I'll be watching for the answer, as I always edit in multiple Sequences myself.

10. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Jeff Bellune May 15, 2009 3:54 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)To get multiple sequences into En from Pr, you don't use the Import
command. You use the Adobe Dynamic Link command (from inside of En).

13. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Bill Hunt May 16, 2009 1:00 PM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff,
Just for my education, you are saying that DL (PrPro to En) WILL bring in all Sequences. Is that correct? I was reading that Mo was not able to get that part to work, but it seems that I mis-read. Can one select specific Sequences (say from a drop-down, etc.) if they did not wish ALL to come over to En? I realize that if one had, say 5 Sequences in the PrPro Project, and all MUST come over, they could choose to NOT use some.
Just curious, and wanting to learn more about DL, so I'll be up to speed, when I upgrade to CS4.
Thanks,
Hunt

14. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Jeff Bellune May 16, 2009 1:17 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hunt,
You have to choose each sequence, one at a time, to be imported. I think. I haven't tried selecting multiple sequences at one time in the Dynamic Link dialog.
I'll check it out and let you know.

15. Re: Newbie help Can you import multiple ppro projects to encore
Jeff Bellune May 16, 2009 1:21 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)You can select multiple sequences for import at one time. The normal Windows' selection shortcuts Ctrl+Click and Shift+Click work as expected.
So you can select one, some or all during any DL import operation.

Bill Hunt May 17, 2009 7:43 PM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff,
Thank you for that info. The DL aspect is one thing calling me to upgrade, though PrPro 2 and Encore 2 still work fine for me. Maybe with the 4.1 update?
Appreciated,

If you have not found the answer, please do initiate a new post. There are several situations that can "create orphaned Menus."
Good luck,
