Binding Arrow Keys and Page Up/Down to Keyboard Shortcuts

    sfjedi Community Member

      When I try to bind:

      1. CTRL+Up
      2. CTRL+Down
      3. CTRL+Page Up
      4. CTRL+Page Down

I get an error that reads, "The key pressed cannot be used as a shortcut."

Is there a way around this?

Does anyone even know why this is? Because Corel PHOTO-PAINT allows you to bind to these keys with no problems.

How are you trying to do it? In the Edit Shortcuts menu?

Why do you want to do it?

          What is your OS?

Ctrl, Alt and Shift act as qualifier keys for tools and palettes. Therfore you may not be able to assign them in any arbitrary combination. Ctrl+arrow is e.g. the alternate quick-access key for the nudge from any tool, Shift+arrow for blending modes, either inside the paint tools or for the layer selected.

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended Version 11.0 on Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit).

How are you trying to do it? In the Edit Shortcuts menu?

Yes, I'm trying to do it in the Keyboard Shortcuts Dialogue (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+K).

Why do you want to do it?

Because I come from a Corel PHOTO-PAINT background, where I'm used to the following, logically intuitive shortcuts:

              1. Ctrl+Up: New >> Layer via Copy (Ctrl+J) aka Jump Copy.
              2. Ctrl+Down: Has no Photoshop equivalent, but it's similar to Layer >> New >> Background From Layer, but it works even if there's already a background it just merges the active layer with the background.
              3. Ctrl+Page Up: Layer >> Arrange >> Bring Forward (Ctrl+])
              4. Ctrl+Page Down: Layer >> Arrange >> Send Backward (Ctrl+[)

So, is there a way around it?

Sorry Jed you'll just have to use the force!

I suggest you be more flexible and get used to the PS interface. I'm not saying it's better, it's just that you can't expect to progress in life without adapting.

My friends call me Jedi, but would you believe it? I'm actually not a Star Wars fan; though, I might work at ILM after graduation. Who knows?

I understand why you would say this and I would probably say the same thing if I didn't know the details, but I'm the type of person that ALWAYS adapts to the new version of Windows instead of keeping everything in classic mode.

The reason I don't want to adapt per se, is because I don't exclusively use Adobe Photoshop. I'm constantly switching between Corel PHOTO-PAINT and Adobe Photoshop for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:

                      1. Only Photoshop is installed in the computer labs at school.
                      2. I don't have enough money to purchase Photoshop for home use and I don't believe in piracy, but I do own the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite for home use.
                      3. I was "born and raised," figuratively speaking, on the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite.
                      4. Weighing the pros and cons, for me (not you), Corel PHOTO-PAINT is a better product for my day-to-day use. I still believe it to be a more intuitive product than Adobe Photoshop, acknowleding that Photoshop has more features, most of which I don't use.

                        I follow your logic.

                        But ...

If you work at ILM you'll have to adapt even more!

Yupp. The probably don't even know what Photo Paint is. But then again, they may not use much Photoshop, either, but rather a super-secret special version of GIMP with oodles of additional HDR processing features, depth-map manipulation and whatnot...
