sfjedi May 14, 2009 6:48 AM (in response to Bart Cross)Haha! Nice try, but it's Photoshop that's effing up. But a quick load of PHOTO-PAINT did solve my problem for the time being.

Marian Driscoll May 14, 2009 7:30 AM (in response to sfjedi)You could share a screen shot of what you are dealing with.

sfjedi May 14, 2009 7:35 AM (in response to Marian Driscoll)I'm not sure it would help because all you would see is a blank canvas with the paint brush tool selected and Layer 1 selected too.
Nonetheless, next time it presents itself (it's intermittent) I will definitely take a screenshot.

5. Re: Can't Paint Cuz Layer is Locked?
Reynolds (Mark) May 14, 2009 10:12 AM (in response to sfjedi)Locking - you've locked a layer. maybe accidentally pushed the / froward slash key or whatever the PC equivalent to that is.See in Photoshop you can lock transparency, movement, pixel changes or the whole layer- all independant of each other. Great isnt it.
And you need to either turn Open GL off, or get a better graphics card. The fact that the wrong tool icon is displaying could also be a Windows issue. I remember similar things happening when I tried to use photoshop on a PC back at in the distant days of Winedows 98

Reynolds (Mark) May 14, 2009 11:23 AM (in response to Reynolds (Mark))Oh and Jed you are obviously trying to run Photoshop on absolutely rubbish machine, with a completely inadequate graphics card, and most probably insufficient RAM. Before making all the wrong judgements you have, it might be a good idea to try and run it properly .

Nice try, Mark, but actually the machine is very nice. Quad-core proc, 6 GB RAM on 64-bit Vista, $400 nVidia Quadro FX 1700 graphics card. Everything is pretty spanking new. If Photoshop can't handle that then I don't know WHAT to say!
And I verified that my layer wasn't locked too, so I know that wasn't the issue. I checked all the icons on the layers panel to see if the transparency was locked, any padlock icons on the layer, etc. None of it was.
But somehow, when I tried over and over, somehow it just worked itself out. It's completely intermittend and it presents itself even on a fresh start of the application.
