Verity operators

When operators like NEAR, PARAGRAPH, SENTENCE etc, are used in a search string to search a Verity collection, no results are returned. The AND and OR do return results.
Example:
String in a word document "johns lastname is doe"
Searching with "johns AND doe" returns the document.
Searching with "johns NEAR doe" or "johns NEAR/4 doe" doesnt return results.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the syntax or could something be wrong with the installation (MX7 Enterprise on Linux) ?

It turned out to be syntax. Verity operators should be enclosed in <> (except AND and OR which it filters out from the text.

"johns <NEAR> doe" gives the correct results
