InContext - A Suggestion to Adobe

    Stuart Haiz Community Member

Rather than tack this on to another thread, I thought it best to put this on the forum as a direct suggestion...

Adobe, why not offer the ICE service to the legitimate owners of your software as a registration incentive?

At present, the suggested scheme of a paid service is like selling us a kettle then charging us again for boiling water in it. Our web hosts are the equivalent of the electricity supplier and we pay them for having our sites online. If the proposed fee has any bearing on using the service through your servers, please provide clear documentation so we can use the service whilst hosting on our own servers.

I agree 100% with your post and looks like we posted the same thing about the same time.

"offer the ICE service to the legitimate owners of your software as a registration incentive"

I just shelled out $400.00 for the creative suite, and $75.00 for the missing manuals - now I am fased with a service fee for using what should be included as an MXP / plugin. I have not registered yet...

I can see a way to create a serverless option for CMS using the same concept as ICE / Cushy. It won't be long before someone opensources this technology for all of us and then ICE will have zero pull as an incentive.

Anyone else interested in creating an open source ICE?

            Daniel

I'm in the UK. My upgrade to CS4 was £700 - roughly $1,150. That is after having bought CS3 only a year before at a cost of over £1,300 ($2,140)!!!

We pay through the nose here for some reason and it hacks me off as a self-employed designer who wants to run a legitimate business that Adobe can't see the sense in encouraging MORE legitimate sales.

This is basic business. I am not the only one who is prepared to pay (a lot of hard-earned money) for my tools but I resent being charged an excess if I want to use one of the features of a tool.

              Hi,

I think we need to make a clear distinction here between the InContext Editing authoring capabilities included in Dreamweaver CS4 and the InContext Editing service by itself.

The service does not intend to limit itself to the Dreamweaver user base and will be addressed to a broader audience. The authoring features in Dreamweaver are meant to help Dreamweaver customers author editable websites with no actual commitement to offer free access to the service.

Acknowledging that InContext Editing is a separate service, we need to understand what it would take to make it worth the investment.

              Best regards,

              Cristinel

I understand Christinel as an Adobe employee, you would see it that way. Whilst I understand the distinction you are making, you can not separate the service from the tools.

InContext is an Adobe technology, but all the tools to utilise the service are supplied in a commercial Adobe product (DW), which is designed and promoted by Adobe primarily to web designers (actually users of Adobe DW specifically). The tools are not included in the cheaper editing software app Contribute. The tools are put into DW so we can use them, this is clear.

As a user of Adobe products, I like many others I see on the forums with justifiable concerns, feel Adobe would be less antagonistic in this issue if they could let us host the service ourselves. I come back to my analogy of being sold a kettle (water included in the form of the ICE toolset) and being asked to pay a third-party to boil the water.

Better still, acknowledge that we have already paid a lot of money for the product and give us the service as a registration incentive please!

I havn't seen yet where there is a cost scheme laid out in detail. Only that there will be one. Is there a proposed cost plan anywhere?

Personally I see no problem with a cost plan as long as its practical.

                    Brad

This is from the Adobe InContext Editing FAQs (Free Preview section):

How much does InContext Editing cost?

While in free preview, InContext Editing is available at no charge. The final pricing for the service has not been determined; however, it will be offered as a monthly or annual subscription with a price of US$10 to US$20 per month. Use of the service will likely be limited to five domains, and users will be able to add domains for an additional fee. The service may be bundled with other value-added services for web professionals. It is up to web professionals how they charge their clients for the service.

                      Thanks Sirius,

I had hoped maybe something more concrete had been discussed since then maybe.
