Low resolution image previews in ID CS4

I'm not sure if this issue is a Photoshop or InDesign problem, but I'll try here first...

We've just migrated to CS4 and are noticing that image previews in InDesign (using typical display performance) are considerably 'rougher' than they were in CS2 — but only when we update a modified link, or place a new image. That is, when we open a file that was created in CS2 in CS4, the image previews look good. As soon as we update a modified link the preview becomes very low res.

I've attached three screen grabs to show what I'm seeing.

The first shows what the preview looked like when first opened in CS4 (after being built in CS2).

The other two show new previews after updating the modified link.

The placed CMYK psd file has an effective resolution of 467ppi.

The first two grabs = actual resolution 203ppi @ 43.5% scaling

The third grab = actual resolution 300ppi @ 64.2% scaling

      PS 11.0.1

Preferences set to always save full size preview

      ID 6.0.2

Display performance preferences set to typical = proxy

      Mac OS X 10.5.7

      Thanks in advance,

      d.
