Bill Hunt Jun 29, 2009 8:40 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)Lloyd,
It seems that different cameras need different sequences of turning on, relative to PrPro Capture. Some want to be turned on (correct mode), before PrPro is even launched, while some want to be turned on after the PrPro Capture module has been initialized. Going back a bit, Jim Simon did an article, probably in the CS3 forum, on the various possibilities and the scheme that some of his cameras preferred. If you cannot find his article, you might want to experiment with the order of things, taking notes, until you find the right combo.
Good luck,

lifeguardlloyd Jun 30, 2009 5:00 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Okay, now it gets odd. I can capture in Premiere Elements 4 just fine. I do use a RME Fireface 400 1394 sound card. PreEle will only capture if the sound module is set to the RME (the on board sound module is disabled). I have ensured that this is the case in PrePro CS4; still no luck.

Harm Millaard Jun 30, 2009 8:58 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)Lloyd,
The problem may be that when capturing with PE works without problems, PE does not release the firewire port after use and thus Pr can not use the firewire port. It may be worth trying, before PE or PR are loaded, to start the camera and from the Autoplay screen, select PR as the application.

lifeguardlloyd Jun 30, 2009 7:01 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I installed PE after PrPro; this was after a new hard drive and a clean install. It may be that another piece of hardware is using that port. It may be at the IRQ level. Since I use a FireWire sound card it may be there and yet the two play well together in PE. I'll let you know.

Harm Millaard Jul 1, 2009 5:53 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)Does XP recognize the camera when turned on? If it does, try whether Scenalyzer will capture. http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html
You can use the trial version to test it out. Your footage will be watermarked, but at this moment we just have to figure out where the problem is. BTW, for DV material I always use Scenalyzer to capture and never PR.

lifeguardlloyd Jul 2, 2009 8:39 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Yes XP does recognize the camera and Scenalyzer works. At this point I'm using PE, for capture, untill this gets sorted out. I'm thinking it may be my RME Fireface 400 sound module (FireWire); perhaps it conflicts with PP. When I turn the camera on, the RME goes off line for about 2 seconds and then it's back again. Odd that the capture thing is unique to PP. I'm going to borrow a friend's Sony and see what happens.

Harm Millaard Jul 2, 2009 9:06 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)From the looks of it, I tend to agree with you, even though I'm not familiar with your specific RME card. PR can be very picky about firewire connectors. I would however suggest, since Scenalyzer works without a hitch, to use that in the future for all DV material. Scenalyzer for DV and HDVSplit for HDV are my favorite capture tools. I don't have PE, but never use PR for capturing.

lifeguardlloyd Jul 2, 2009 9:20 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I used PE for years constantly upgrading. For the money it's a very good video editor; it lacks some high-end features, control, and rendering is slow. For someone just getting into video, it's a great cost effective program. I appreciate your help - Thank you.

lifeguardlloyd Jul 2, 2009 7:48 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hooked up the on board sound card and everything works. So it's the RME.

lifeguardlloyd Jul 6, 2009 7:59 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)Just to close this thread; it appears that PP does not like two firewire devices running at the same time.

Bill Hunt Jul 6, 2009 8:19 AM (in response to lifeguardlloyd)Lloyd,
Glad that you got it sorted out, and thanks for reporting. I've seen many instances where a shared FW controller chip would cause issues. When building a system, I go for separate controller chips for all of my FW connections. For Capture, I have a dedicated chip on a FW card, that sees nothing else - ever.
Also note that USB can be even worse, when it comes to sharing controllers. The idea of a hub, or similar will only work with certain devices. Again, several separate chips is a better solution, as conflicts are usually averted. Note: the comments on USB are for general use, as PrPro will not be using these.
