Running CS3 on a Mac that has CS4 on it already

Due to a glitch in CS4 that scrambles data in a data merge, it's been suggested to do the merge in CS3, (at least till there's a fix for CS4). Can I install CS3 on my Mac that's already got CS4 on it?

Should I open a new user account on the Mac and put CS3 on it? I already installed CS4 and told it to make it available to all user accounts on the Mac. Will I need to de-install CS4, then re-install, but only for 1 user account?

Installing CS3 will glitch CS4 and require CS4 to be reinstalled. After that, I expect both to work. It's rare to see people wanting to install older versions when newer versions are installed, so there's less experience. Usually one has CS3, keeps it installed,  then installs CS4. That's what I've got, and both work fine. Worst case scenario is you'll have to wipe CS4, install CS3, then install CS4.
