I had Flash Media Server running fine. I didn't make any changes, but suddenly, RTMP requests are not being serviced. I've restarted the FMS service. I've updated from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2, which required a restart of the server. Nothing.

A week ago all of the vod applications were running fine. I don't know when things stopped working. Any ideas on troubleshooting this problem would be most appreciated.

Can you connect to your FMS at all?  What happens if you try and playback from it locally, i.e. on the same machine - still nothing?

If it works fine locally then you're having some kind of network problem - perhaps the port FMS listens on by default (1935) has been blocked.

If it doesn't work fine locally, please check the FMS logs and your system logs for errors or warnings on FMS startup.

I found the following in the edge00.log file:

Failed to create listener for adaptor _defaultRoot_, IP 209.254.38.46, port 1935: TCCommBridge::createListener 209.254.38.46:1935/v4: bind failed!!!. -

I've attached the entire log file. If anyone knows why the bind would fail, please let me know. It was working for at least a few days before it stopped.

Things that I have done:

Restarted the service.

Upgraded from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2, which required reboot of machine. Also, restarted service again.

Any other log files that someone can suggest that I look at would be appreciated, too.

I will try to determine what might cause this on my own and will post back if I find the solution.

I'm not sure why the FMS could not bind to the port.

Possibilities are the FMS Admin was bound to the port (bug?) because it was running when I tried to restart the FMS service.

It's possible that the way that I was starting the service was causing trouble. I was starting the service via services.exe, not the shortcuts in the start menu or the bat files in the tools folder. It shouldn't make a difference that I was using services versus the other methods, so I lean more towards there being a bug in that the FMS Admin service is causing a problem. Hopefully, it will never happen again.

You'd fail to bind to 1935 if there was already another FMS running on the system, or some other application was configured to use it. FMSAdmin doesn't listen on port 1935 unless you explicitly configure it to, and you can check that in your fms.ini here

SERVER.ADMINSERVER_HOSTPORT = (my default shown)

The other failures are trying to bind port 80, which is also in use. Presumably your webserver is listening there, which also means that you can't have FMS share it directly - you'll want to remove 80 from this list also in fms.ini

ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT = :1935,80 (my default shown)

I wanted to revive this thread because it is relevant again.  We just updated FMS 4.0.2 to 4.0.3 and it stopped all of the IIS website from functioning correctly after the server was rebooted.  Looking in the logs gave the same error message.

Failed to create listener for adaptor _defaultRoot_, IP 209.254.38.46, port 1935: TCCommBridge::createListener 209.254.38.46:1935/v4: bind failed!!!

Luckily I had made a copy of the folder before updating (I really wish there were just patch updates and not full application install updates...) which I was able to use a file compare tool to find a significant settings file change that I did not make myself during update.

What was set before;

ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT = :1935,8080

What the updater changed it to;

ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT = :1935,80

Changing it back and restarting the services fixed the issue and allowed me to bring all of the IIS websites back online since they are host header websites on 1 IP.
