Hi there

I'm as curious as Leon is. But I'll be happy to list some things.

All of these are assorted files that manage your project. You reall don't want to be making changes to these without good reason. You may end up confusing RoboHelp and possibly corrupting parts or all of your project.

  • .ali - Alias file - Used with Context Sensitive help - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .BRS - Stores Browse Sequences - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .cpd - Cache Project Database - Can be opened with Microsoft Access
  • .glo - Stores Glossary - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .hhc - Stores TOC - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .hhk - Stores Index - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .hhp - HTML Help (.CHM) project file - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .ign - Stores Ignore list - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .ldb - Lock Database file used with .CPD
  • .phr - Stores Phrase List - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .ppf - Stores ancillary project information - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .pss - Stores ancillary project information - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .stp - Stores Stop List - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .syn - Stores Synonym List - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .xpj - Main Project Datatbase file with XML data - Can be opened with Notepad

Hopefully this helps... Rick

Thank you so much Rick!!

I was wondering if I replace the .hhk file or .hhc file with one from another project,  will that result in replacement of the current TOC or index with the index or TOC of the other project. Moreover, if my current project does not have an index or TOC, will replacing it with one that already has one help?

@ Rick: Per your answer :

  • .ppf - Stores ancillary project information - Can be opened with Notepad
  • .pss - Stores ancillary project information - Can be opened with Notepad
  • Are they the same?

    Thanks a lot!!

    Hi there

Sure, you can replace the TOC or Index files if you like. But you need to stop and consider what the files contain. Entries that are linked to specific topics in your project. So if you copy the files, do you have the identical topics in the identical locations? If so, great. But if not (and that's more likely to be the case) you will end up with gobs of broken links from the TOC or Index that you will need to fix. So you would need to weigh the time cost of fixing all the broken links to what it takes to build a new TOC or Index.

PPF and PSS are different. Sorry, I'm not overly familiar with their contents. I think they may be related to Single Source Layouts and possible Source Control.

    Cheers... Rick

    Hi there

Just experience. I just pulled them out of my warped cranium.

See, I'm a dinosaur. I've used RoboHelp almost every day since 1992.

    Welcome to our community

Typically you can create a fresh TOC in a variety of ways. If you are using RoboHelp 7 or 8 you can right-click the Table of Contents pseudo folder and choose to create a New TOC!
