    Paragraph numbers in footer?

    RodneyA Community Member

I was surprised to find that when I put a text variable in the master page footer, it placed the text of the appropriate paragraph in the footer on the body pages, but omitted the auto-number. That is, the paragraph might read "6. Labeling of In Vitro Products," but the footer just reads "Labeling of In Vitro Products." It's odd to be spoiled by a product I haven't used in six years, but FrameMaker was good at this kind of thing -- you could put in whatever building blocks you wanted, including the paragraph's number. Do I need to divide my little book into separate documents so I can use the "Chapter Number" feature?

          I would say yes.

If you used the numbered list setting for your paragraph style, the number is not a part of the actual text in the header, and that's probably why the number is omitted. Well, it's not really omitted, cause it's not a part of the actual header text. In other words, you haven't got a variable for your footer.

And then, if you decide to make a list for the footer as well, to solve the problem by trying to combine your Headerstyle with the Footerstyle, the footer numbering will allways be an independent numbering and it will not vary as long as it's attached to the pagemaster anyway - you'll have to override the the items from the master - in short, you will make a big chaotic mess - particularly if your document needs to expand in the future.

By making a small book, all your concerns will go away, and it is a very powerfull and flexible feature in InDesign, that gives you a lot of control and a lot of automation. Here you can use chapters, sections and markers, textvariables etc.

Remember a book does not need to be a 100 pages to be a book in InDesign!

          PS: I assume you're using CS4?
