Apparently this is a problem accross platforms. I have the same problem with Adobe Digital Editions on Vista 64 bit.

For my selected eBook, the following permissions are listed within Adobe Digital Editions:

Allow viewing: on this computer

Allow copying: not allowed

Allow printing: on any device

As you can see, printing should be allowed on any device for this book. Unfortunately, whenever I try to print, the program crashes without printing a single page.

ADOBE NEEDS TO FIX THIS SOON.

A similiar problem is occuring with one of our users here at Queen's University Belfast. The user has the latest version of ADE on an iMac7,1 . He had no problem installing ADE or opening documents from the British library but as soon as he clicks on print the application closes with the message "The application Adobe Digital editions quit unexpectedly"

An explanation of why this happens would be great. i can supply more info or a screenshot if needed.

Me too! Just got my first SED documents from the British Library. The software is very fiddly to read on the screen and anyway I wanted to print to read it on the train. As soon as I tried the software crashed. So I tried again, and again. Then I downloaded the sample document that the British Library provides. When I ask to print that the software crashes as well.

the paper info says "Allow printing : 12 pages, on this computer, at a maximum resolution of 3600dpi", BL sample paper says the same except that it is only 2 pages.

I am annoyed that the British Libary has provided time limited (self destruct) literature that can only be viewed in one unstable proprietory software. Adobe have a good reputation for software products but maybe are a bit full of themselves for winning this kind of scoop. This problem was pointed out over a month ago and nobody from Adobe has acknowledged it and it does not appear in the list of known issues. I shall be writing to my university library and the British Library and asking them to put pressure on Adobe to improve response to customer problems and ensure a stable product.

This could be a printer memory issue, or a MAC issue. I'm not an expert on MAC's or printing, but I do know that Digital Editions prints documents as a bitmap, so given the huge sizes of bmp documents on a Windows PC, it may be the same on a MAC?

If you try printing at a lower resolution, this may help.

I know people are trying to be helpful when suggesting things like printer memory, and adjusting resolutions, but this really misses the point. (and does not solve the problem in any case)

The bottom line is Adobe has produced a buggy product that does not print as advertised and they need to fix the problem. There are many, many users with the same issue, and it happens on both MAC and Windows platforms.

I spoke with Adobe about this and they tried to suggest printer driver issues, etc, which is a complete sham because every other application on my computer prints just fine, including Adobe PDF. Normally Adobe produces some pretty good products, but this one is clearly an exception.

I wound up getting my money back from the vendor because the product does not function as advertised (i.e. it does not print) I suggest you all do the same. Further, I recommend you advise all your friends, colleagues, co-workers, and fellow students to steer clear of Adobe Digital Editions until they make an honest effort to address the problems with this faulty, ill conceived and poorly supported product.

Had a chat with our local librarian. She said

"SED documents, MAC pcs and Adobe Digital Editions is not a good combination I'm afraid! As you have found, they can be read but there are problems with printing."

As for Russ West, I have no problem printing even large files from other programs from my Mac. Adobe Reader prints fine. The single difference is the program.

The give away that there is a bug is that the program crashes and dies. If the program was written to capture problems with printer drivers or overloads it would gracefully fail and give you a sensible message about what was wrong.

Will somebody from Adobe *please* acknowledge this problem and tell us what you are doing to fix it!

I am having the same problem on my mac G4 trying to print articles from the British Library with Digital editions crashing every time.

I have tried reloading all Adobe stuff on my mac and still nothing

Many of the comments refer to British Library documents. My original posting also related to a BL document. I have emailed both the BL (no reply) and my local library, whose reply included the following:

ADOBE READER VERSION 6 IS REQUIRED
To open the document you will need to have Adobe Reader version 6 or above set
up with the Digital Rights Management function activated. (If you have version
6.01 or above this will be done automatically).

I am unable to check whether this sorts the problem since the BL stuff I have is past its expiry date. Any comments?

Greetings!

Actually several of our PhD researchers in the Department have had the same problem.

Mainly on Mac's sofar, all updated with the latest version of ADE 1.7.1, which incidentally you have not much choice of as you are presented with the upgrade window before you can proceed.

We have down loaded the files successfully, but each machine crashes when we try to print. There are no other issues with the machine for any other program. We are just about to try it on a PC, but we have seen posts with similar results for PC's.

This will affect the whole Department and Adobe's reputation for providing usable and reliable software, please help!

I was just composing a question about this when I noticed that this has already come up here... nearly two months ago.

It has worked fine for me in the past (Mac OS X 10.5, intel) when receiving documents from the british library, but now following upgrade to ADE 1.7.1 I see crashes on OS X 10.5.7 whenever I attempt to print... even for the standard british library test document.

WTF are Adobe playing at? Has anybody found a workaround for this? I understand that bugs come up in software, but I am now somewhat astounded that this issue was reported 2 months ago without any response from Adobe.

We are not seeing this, though we have tried to reproduce it. Does this happen with any document or specific ones? What type of printer are you printing to? We would love to fix this, but we have to be able have it happen to find the problem.

I have opened case 0181048830 on this issue. If Adobe are serious about addressing this issue, I would have thought the most effective way is to discuss directly with the British Library as they appear to be aware of the problem - it certainly didn't sound like I was the first who had reported it to them!

As I stated, this happens with any British Library document I receive. including their standard test document which is freely available here:

In my case the printer is a LaserJet 4300, but as I say the crash occurs with print preview as well, which makes me think it's not a specific printer issue. No weirdness about my system as far as I am aware (just factory-installed printer drivers etc).

If you do need specific debugging information from my machine then do get in touch - I am experienced with all Apple's debugging tools, but am of course limited by the lack of symbolic information etc in the standard install of ADE.

Hello Ric,

I too reported a case with Adobe. Case opened on May 11, 2009, Case #0180928484. Running on Windows Vista, printing on Epson Stylus C62 printer. (a very common printer) Adobe has since closed this case without offering any real help whatsoever.

Adobe Digital Editions is the only program on any of my five computers that causes this crash when trying to print. It crashes every time I try to print whether a whole document or even a couple of pages - even when I have print rights on the document.

I purchased my digital edition book from McGraw Hill Publishers entitled Communicating Effecctively, by Saundra Hybels, Richard L Weaver II. I doubt it is a problem with the book since the British Library seems to have the same issue with Digital Editions.

I agree with the poster (jmt_dh1) above that Adobe should work with the British Library if they have a sincere desire to resolve the issue. They have a large customer base depending on this, and probably have a large sample of different e-texts to work with in solving the problem.

You might also try working with McGraw Hill Publishers e-bookstore http://www.mhprofessional.com/getpage.php?c=ebookstore2.php since I'm sure their customers have encountered the same problem. I finally got so frustrated after trying for two weeks, that I demanded my money back from them since the book would not print as advertised.

I have also removed Digital Editions from my computer as I would any unworthy software that malfunctions and causes crashes.

As Ric mentioned, we are unable to reproduce this issue here in Adobe. We need to reproduce the issue in order to fix it.

So far we got only one crash report. It would be great to have more crash reports.

2 What permissions do you have on the PC where crash happens: do you have full or limited administrative rights?
3 What exactly printer was used (Made and Model).

HP Laserjet 4300 OR NONE AT ALL. I have reproduced this on my home machine which has never been connected to a printer in its life. The print dialog reads "no printer selected" and it crashes when I hit "preview", which suggests to me that the printer type is not the issue.

I get occasional emails from Adobe assuring me that they are apparently working on a fix, but have not had any solution suggested. If your problem is with stuff from the British Library then just email Customer-Services@bl.uk explaining you can't print because of a bug in ADE, and they will send you a TIFF version.
