1. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
Stix Hart Aug 9, 2009 9:36 PM (in response to gailcnyc)Could it be a read only version, and when you're saving it it's saving it to a temporary folder somewhere else?

2. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
Bill@VT Aug 10, 2009 1:03 AM (in response to Stix Hart)Steve's suggestion seems reasonable. It is likely that the save button is greyed out since it is a newer PDF version and you can not make changes to the form itself. The only save option you would have would be for form fields. Many newer PDFs can be opened in prior versions of Acrobat (although I have been running into some that won't even open), but can not be saved because you do not have the ability to make changes (version related). May be worth a check - version is available under ctrl-D of the document.

3. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
gailcnyc Aug 10, 2009 7:07 AM (in response to Bill@VT)Well, it's true they are forms that I can only change text in the fields. So I checked the version, they were created in Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2. But as I tried to make clear, I've been working a large batch of these docts with NO problem, many of them created as copies of the SAME doct. And even the two times I had this problem, the doct had been saving just fine for quite a while before this weird saving problem. And as I said, the save option is only grayed out sometimes. It's the randomness that bugs me. I'll try to keep doing "save as" and checking the time of the last save, but after a while it seems fine and I revert back to the usual, faster ways of working. And then wham! I've lost a bunch of work and time.

4. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
Bill@VT Aug 10, 2009 8:05 AM (in response to gailcnyc)It may be that you do not need to save the file. The save button is typically not active if you have done nothing to the file that would make a change.

6. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
Fiat_Lux Aug 11, 2009 12:16 AM (in response to gailcnyc)Hello GailCNYC
I only have Reader so it's not like I got a lot of experience with Acrobat.
What I do have is many years of experience as PC troubleshooter.
Though it in this case is hard trouble-shooting a program I don't have access to using then I can still use general experience to comment on your problems.
It seems to me that both "Reader" and "Acrobat" got some bugs of a multitude of nature.....
But let us revert to your initial post where you wrote :
"But just now Acrobat crashed, and when I re-opened my doct it was a version from maybe a half hour ago,and I had done a "save as" at least 8 to 10 times since then. Does anyone know of anything that could be causing this??"
We might be looking at two problems here.....
1) The "problem" that when a program crashes it may "revert" to some former state to which the program has saved and were thus "aware of" is something well known and can sometimes be expected from some programs - some programs just looses it all when they crashes....
2) Your "general save problem" :
Since I don't got Acrobat and haven't worked with it I ofcourse can't offer you the benefit of any personal experiences with the program ,
but I can however ask "an obvious question" and give "an obvious suggestion" that might be of use should you be experiencing a "bug" with the Acrobat program...
My question and suggestion is (and I do not understand why no-one else has got to this before) :
You wrote : "So I decided to start doing "save as" frequently" ,
Yes ! OK ! but when using "save as" did you then use the "old filename" and overwrite your "last save"/"original file" ??? , my guess is that you do/did . Then if you should be experiencing a bug with the Acrobat program then my suggestion is as follows :
Try saving your edits to a new name EVERY time when using "save as" , like naming them "my-file-save-A-0001" to/through "my-file-save-A-9999" .
If wont fix your eventual Acrobat program bug (and might be considered a "pest" to work with by you) but if it works you at least won't lose the the work you have done and thus loosing your valuable time......
If it works then once in a while you can wipe out as many "back edits" as you like with your file manager plus once in a while "overwrite" the file you "wants your work to end up being" with your latest succesfully saved edit (using technique mentioned) by using your file mangager (in M.S. Windows , if you uses that , then the standard file manager is the "Explorer") .
Sorry ! , can't solve your problem with an eventual internal bug in Acrobat... but you can have my kindly suggested advice....
Kind regards

7. Re: Acrobat losing changes, reverts to a much-earlier saved version
gailcnyc Aug 11, 2009 4:30 AM (in response to Fiat_Lux)Re your first comment: Acrobat crashed the second time I had this problem, but the first time I had saved and saved, closed the doct, and continued working on another doct. Then I re-opened that first doct, and it was a much earlier version missing a lot of my text input. But not ALL of it, which is why it's so frustrating. It's just completely random. Which brings us to your second point: bug in the program. No surprise there. But you make a good point about using "save as" with a different name. I actually was doing that - something I learned a long time ago using QuarkXpress (talk about a buggy program!). So even though I lost some work the second time, it was much less than the first time it happened. I think that it's a really good point to make for anyone else who may experience this problem.
