1. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
Curt Y Aug 23, 2009 9:59 AM (in response to riskypotato)If it worked before and not now don't reinstall, it will probably solve nothing. You probably have a contaminated file. What you should try is to reset preferences.
Hold down the Crtl key and then start Bridge. You will get a reset window. Choose all 3 options.

riskypotato Aug 23, 2009 10:26 AM (in response to Curt Y)Clearspace,
Thanks for the advice. You meant the option key. Unfortunately it's no
help. Problem persists in another folder too.

3. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
riskypotato Aug 23, 2009 10:32 AM (in response to Curt Y)These 2 folders mentioned are subfolders of a folder titled
"JULY10_20". Problem DOES NOT occur in folder called "JULY2_9".
Perhaps this (former) folder became corrupt. I'll reload these pics
from the hd where they came from and see if that helps./Phil

5. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
RWSP Aug 23, 2009 11:06 AM (in response to riskypotato)A most important part of this error message is the file type: error trying to write to a cr2 file. Bridge (and Photoshop/Camera Raw) should never write to a camera raw file. Metadata should be written either to sidecar xmp files or to an internal database. This error most likely means that Bridge incorrectly tried to write metadata to a cr2 file (as it might do for a dng file) instead of where it should have been written.
Are you using xmp sidecar files? If so, were the xmp file already existing when you try to add keywords or would Bridge be creating new xmp files? If already existing, what was the most recent action that would have updated thes files) camera raw edits? template? file Info?) and how recent -- immediately before adding keywords?
Was Bridge working on a previous operation -- was the status indicator rotating - showing Bridge busy?

6. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
Curt Y Aug 23, 2009 11:39 AM (in response to riskypotato)It sounds like you did not get the reset window. Is that correct? Press and HOLD Ctrl key and then click on desktop icon that starts Bridge.

riskypotato Aug 23, 2009 11:47 AM (in response to Curt Y)I held down the option key (Mac) to get the "reset settings" box:
reset preferences, purge entire thumbnail cache, and reset standard
workplaces. It doesn't let you reset prefs and workplaces at the same
time, so i reset prefs and cache.

8. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
riskypotato Aug 23, 2009 11:57 AM (in response to RWSP)I've never ever had a problem writing metadata to RAW files and
certainly prefer that scenario, in the (not uncommon) event I want to
re-work the RAW file and process a new TIFF. Have always done this in
this manner, as far as I know. I'm not using sidecar files, am storing
info in the ACR database. Bridge was not busy during these errors.

9. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'.
Curt Y Aug 23, 2009 12:05 PM (in response to riskypotato)Sorry about the Ctrl key. Just assumed you were on Windows machine. Strange that you could not reset all 3 windows, not sure what that means, perhaps different in Mac?
You might explore what Robert said above and see if that leads you to a solution. What are you calling an ACR data base (keyword file)? As far as I know Bridge writes metadata directly to image or to XMP sidecar file.

10. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
RWSP Aug 23, 2009 12:23 PM (in response to riskypotato)If you can reproduce this at will, I think this could be something Adobe might like to have as a potential bug report.

11. Re: "There was an error writing metadata to 'XXXXXXXX.CR2'. "
01af Aug 25, 2009 1:56 AM (in response to riskypotato)I am having a similar problem. I have several Bridge scripts which modify metadata of raw files, and sometimes I'm getting the same error message. It usually happens when batch-processing several hundred files at once; it often will fail on one or two of them. When re-doing the processing on those files that failed previously then it usually works ... sometimes (rarely) on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.
However when checking the metadata that is supposed to be modified in the process, I often find files where the update has silently failed. I'd get the error message on maybe two files but the process has failed on several dozen files. The solution is to iterate through a few cycles of checking and re-starting the script until all files are properly updated.
By the way, when running the same scripts on JPEG files then the error never happens. It will only occur on raw files storing their metadata in sidecar files. I am using Bridge CS4 on 32-bit Windows XP SP2; the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+.

riskypotato Aug 25, 2009 4:04 AM (in response to 01af)Thanks Olaf, you're confirming my suspicion that these errors are
related to my attempt to install a script.
