FREEHAND WILL WORK ON SNOW LEOPARD!!!!!!!!

My english is not so good and i currently have no time to translate

ist - but here is the solution in german:

Freehand in 10.5 Leopard wie gehabt installieren und einmal starten um

        die Seriennummer einzugeben.

Jetzt Start von SnowLeopard DVD und über das 10.5 System installieren.

        Dann Freehand starten.

Sollte es gleich gehen passt alles - ansonsten einmal im Single User

Mode booten und Freehand starten. Danach geht es auch normal ohne den

        Single User Mode.

Aber Achtung - der erste Start von Freehand kann durchaus 1-2 Minuten

        dauern.

So - jetzt läuft alles soweit

        hd/library/appl.support/macromedia/FreeHand MXa Registration

Wenn man diese Datei einmal von einem lauffähigen 10.6 Freehand hat

        gibts keine Probleme mehr.

Also - Snow Leopard ganz frisch auf eine neue Platte installieren.

        Dann ganz normal Freehand installieren.

Nach der Installation eben diese "FreeHand MXa Registration" an den

        o.g. Ort legen!

        FREEHAND STARTEN - FETTIG!!!!!!

        GENIAL

Kein Single User Mode, kein Update von 10.5!

        Einfach genial!

          Google Translation -- Not Perfect...

FreeHand 10.5 Leopard, how to install and had to start again
          enter the serial number.

Now start SnowLeopard DVD and on the 10.5 system installed.

          Then restart FreeHand.

Should it go at everything fits - otherwise, once a single user
Fashion load and launch FreeHand. Thereafter, it is also normal without the
          Single User Mode.
But beware - the first launch of FreeHand can thoroughly 1-2 minutes
          last.

So - now everything is running so far
But what if you want to have FreeHand on a clean 10.6 without prior
          to go via 10.5?

Quite simply - it is solely attributable to the registry file!
The Regisitrierungsprozess not function with SnowLeopard.
You will, however fortunately only needed 1x create the file --
then you can run FreeHand for the future more directly on
          one fresh install 10.6.

You have to FH with the above-mentioned way at once to run 10.6
bring. Then, this file is updated.

I.e. it secures the Registry file forever.
          It lies in
          hd / library / appl.support / macromedia / Freehand MXa Registration

If you have this file once a runnable 10.6 FreeHand
          gibts no more problems.

So - Snow Leopard fresh install on a new disk.
          Then install as normal Freehand.

After installation, these same "FreeHand MXa Registration" in the
          o.g. Place basket!

          FREEHAND LAUNCH - Oily !!!!!!
          GENIAL

No single user mode, no update from 10.5!
          Simply brilliant!

Tried moving the Registration file from a working computer running 10.5 and that didn't work either.

I did.  I installed Snow Leopard, then I installed Freehand right from the DVD from 2004.  Nothing happens.  The Google translation above is seriously bad so it's possible I'm missing something but so far I am unsuccessful.

                  But for me also:

It doesn't work on 2 MacPro, 1 MacBook Pro

I talked to some friends of mine - also Freehand users.

It it definitely seems to have something to do with the Macrovision supplied registration process.

The friends which have "older" serial numbers which are VOLUME serials or education ones can work on freehand without any problems doing this what is postet here.

All serial nubers which require an activation after typing in seem not to work.

It is a problem with the serial:

                      FHD110-... does not work.

                      WPD700-... works !!!

The first is a single, the second a volumenumber...

I can confirm this. My single user serial number absolutely does not work, but a friend with a volume license has had no problem at all. The application simply doesn't attempt to reactivate the serial number when the registration file contains a volume license, and so the app does not crash on startup.

I have a serial number for Studio MX, which starts with WPD700. It will not work.

But is it a volume one?

The volume number registration can also be copied as descripted above.

                            It works!

I also have a WPD700... serial number which does not work.  But it *is* a single user license.

The unspoken irony here is that the volume Freehand license is about to get pirated wholesale by thousands of Freehand users because Adobe isn't going to spend any time fixing it.  I don't think they managed to convert a single Freehand user.

Anyhow, time to for me to buy a nice powermac G4 dedicated for use of the superior Freehand application.

Good Grief!! Like most people on these boards over the past few days, I also have tried EVERY workaround with no success. I have an individual license (FHD) and have been a Freehand user since it's inception. Please, Adobe, someone...find a fix or a workaround soon. I have thousands of files I need to access to do my job, along with a weekend wasted trying to figure this out. Ugh!!

                                      Tabitha,

I was hoping you could provide a few more details for clarity.

                                      1. What kind of Mac did you install this on?

                                      2. Did you do a Clean Install of 10.6 or an Upgrade from 10.5.8?

                                      3. Did you install Freehand from the 2004 Studio CD or from a Single License CD?

                                      4. What version of Freehand was installed?

                                      5. Did you run any of the updates to Freehand (11.0.2 or the HotFix posted here) prior to lanuching and entering your serial number?

                                      6. Did you run any updates after activating Freehand?

I would prefer to use Freehand over Illustrator for as long as I can.

                                      Thanks for sharing.

                                        Tabitha,

Thanks for your help. I dug through my disks and found the installer for Freehand 11.0 (build 416) which prompts you immediately for your serial number before even starting the install and it worked!!!

Only problem now is there is no way for me to upgrade to 11.0.2 (Freehand MXa) as the only way to get to 11.0.2 is to have 11.0.1 installed first and that version when I install it fresh won't launch under 10.6 for me.

So, I guess I'm stuck with 11.0 but at least it works and I can still get what I need done.

Still it would be better if Adobe came out with a fix for all this -- I'd be happy to pay for an update even, not that I should have to, but I would.

                                        Cheers -- Craig

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This fix worked great for me! I tried just deleting the registration file so it would have me put in the new muti-user serial number, but that did not work, Freehand tried to launch for few seconds and then quit. I would have just reinstalled my Freehand, but after a few moves I seem to have lost my original disks. Luckily you can just download it from the Adobe site. Of course it is an old installer that does not work with Snow Leopard. So I installed 10.5 on another drive and installed freehand on that drive and then took the registration file from that drive over to my main drive running 10.6. And it worked! Thanks so much.

I am running MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33.

Ok, I finally got it to work...

I'm on a 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Xeon MacPro, with 10.5.8 running on a different drive in the box.

I think the problem is not that SL doesn't like FH, I think it's the damn activation (Macrovision ???) background app that get buggered up.

                                                Here's my "solution":

                                                1. Brand New Drive (or at least erased and reformatted)

                                                2. Installed Leopard 10.5

                                                3. Installed Freehand MXa 11.0.2

                                                4. Ran FH inside 10.5....

                                                5. ...and used a VOLUME license code, which allowed FH to start right up.

                                                6. Then upgraded that 10.5 drive to Snow Leopard 10.6.

                                                7. Finally got Leopard Installer to boot into that drive and finish the install.

(This took bloody forever. Why oh why can't it find the right drive?! It kept either booting into the "new" 10.5 drive without finishing the install; with the install files just sitting there, or would boot back into my original 10.5.8 system. But it finally worked on about the fifth try. Don't remember how I got it to work.)

                                                8. Then I used Migration Assistant to move my system files, but NOT applications.

                                                9. FH MXa now works in 10.6 Snow Leopard.

-However, the first time I started it up, SL needed to install Rosetta (which I forgot to include in the install this time), but second launch worked fine.

...nothing like spending a good 7-8 hours (and literally a dozen unique installs of 10.5 and 10.6) to get it to work.

Adobe: I will gladly reinstall using my paid for single seat license if you (Adobe/Apple) fix the blasted activation issue. Heck, I'd even pay some reasonable amount for an installer file that would bypass activation altogether (with serial number approval, or course). And yes, I also have purchased and use CS4 Design Premium, so this isn't about scalping sales, it's about meeting my CLIENT'S needs....

                                                GOOD LUCK, FELLOW FHers!!!

Kudos to all of those who have helped work this out. For me, three lost days and I have FINALLY got FH MX to work in Snow Leopard. Followed a bit of the above protocol, along with the help of the volume license printed in a previous post.

                                                    1) Restored to Leopard, via Time Machine, to external drive.

                                                    2) Restarted from that drive.

                                                    3) Opened Freehand MX and went to Transfer My License under Help menu.

                                                    4) Quit and reopen Freehand MX, entering the "new" volume license number - all while still in 10.5.8, or Leopard.

                                                    5) Choose original drive with 10.6 installed as Startup Disk.

                                                    6) Restart iMac.

                                                    7) Copy over MX folder from backup drive, including new registration file under Library/Application Support/Macromedia.

Voila! I can't believe it took all this time (the last three days) to get this to work, but I am grateful to be up and running FH MX in Snow Leopard. The ability to use/create files without having to restart under a different system makes me feel like it's Christmas. Thanks to all those who have boldly gone before and posted the assistance. Thank you Adobe for proving to me again why I continue to choose a 6-year old FH product over any version of Illustrator over and over and over again.

Insane. None of these tips are working for me so I decide to go through a rack of CD's I haven't seen in 8+ years and I come across my Freedhand 10 CD.  I toss it into the CD and run the installer in Snow Leopard.  Within 3 minutes I had Freehand 10 installed and running.  And the really messed up part is that it never asked me for the serial number. WTF? (wow that's funny).

Will try to upgrade from this point but I'm in no hurry, for the kind of illustrations I do I have never required more than Freehand 7.

I'm still shocked that anyone would ever want to use Illustrator.  What a hog of an app with a back-asswards workflow.

Oh the irony.  You can download the 30 trial version of 11.0.2 and it works like a charm — presumably for 30 days.

Going to try one last thing which may be the ultimate solution in the end.  Install Freehand on my XP bootcamp partition running via VMWare.  At least XP and virtualization aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I just installed 10.6 Snow Leopard and the first application I tried to launch was Freehand 11.0.2 . . .no go and just finding this thread.

Scanning down to post 64, I decided to download and install the 30 trial version of 11.0.2 . . . which does not work for me. Same launch, start and quit.

Any revision/additions to notes above based on 10.6 install as recently released? Am I understanding correctly that substituting WPD700 for FHD110- in serial is needed?

Yes, apparently the WPD700... multi-license works but you'll need to find that yourself (or, as some people recently found out, you get booted off the forum and likely sued).  It would be nice if Adobe released a script to allow us to quickly patch our copies, I highly doubt they appreciate us running around willing to pirate copies (seems they still sell FH so it's only fair they release a tiny patch).

The only thing that would make me switch to Illustrator is if Adobe adds a mode to simulate all of Freehand's tools and workflow.  As it stands, the Illustrator workflow is just too complex for absolutely no reason.

As it it now, I only use Illustrator, which I own, for opening pdf files so I can import them into Freehand or when I receive a file that has been created in Illustrator by someone else. Illustrator is just not intuitive at all!

Perhaps they'll cease offering Freehand instead of fixing the installer - (Likely a half day's work for someone.)

                                                                        I keep a PowerPC G5 running 10.4.11 as a backup for running Freehand 11.0.2 - just in case . . .

                                                                        1. Open Library/Application Support/Macromedia and remove registration file.
                                                                        2. relaunch and re-serial with WPD as noted above.
                                                                        3. Copy folder (Library/Application Support/Macromedia) to a drive accessible to 10.6 system (via TimeCapsule, flash drive, etc.)
                                                                        4. Replace (Library/Application Support/Macromedia) folder of 10.6 based 11.0.2 application with the one copied to TimeCapsule or flash drive.
                                                                        5. Launch and enjoy the best application ever!  Impressive engineering!
