PS CS4 grid appearing at 600% zoom

I've noticed something odd happening once I zoom into an image >= 600%. If you look at the attached images, I have a document with a black background (for an example). Once I zoom to 600%, I see a faint grid (even when grid is turned off "no-grid.jpg"). If I turn the grid on at this point, you will see what happens with "with-grid.jpg".This also seems to happen with basically any background color except white. If I have a white background, even zooming to 3200%, I do not see the querk as descibed above.

In my preferences under guides, grids, and slices, I have a gridline every 1 pixel with 1 subdivision (just like I've always had in previous PS versions). Does anyone know what's going on here?
