miamitom Oct 10, 2009 6:13 PM (in response to John T Smith)John,
According to the following excerpt from Adobe:
"I checked the link of the third party vendor which you provided us. Let
me explain that any third party vendor can sell Adobe Products. Just
make sure that you are getting the untampered Disc/Media <(>&<)> the
billing proof/purchase proof of
the product."What the heck does that mean? Does that mean Adobe says its ok?
Not really clear. I guess I will have to keep my question open to Adobe. I know they are never happy with having their software undersold.
I guess to be on the safe side "IF it sounds too good.....etc"
Would be interesting to get a definative answer.
Yours,
Tom

miamitom Oct 11, 2009 3:11 AM (in response to miamitom)John,
I did some further checking.
I did a WHO IS search and that site is registered in China (CN). I guess you are correct in NEVER download except from the original manufacturer.
Oh well.
Thanks,
Tom

I buy from Amazon or from various Education outlets (work at a University - see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/496667?tstart=0 for more) that are all approved vendors
A download is not "untampered Disc/Media" and when I do buy via download, it is always from the actual software producer, such as the backup program I use http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm

miamitom Oct 11, 2009 11:46 AM (in response to John T Smith)Of course, if there is no disk/media you can't tell if it has been tampered with. . . .duh
Still learning and thanks for your patience.

John T Smith Oct 11, 2009 1:06 PM (in response to miamitom)Even WITH actual discs, you need to be careful
I think it is the Photoshop forum that has a LONG message thread about buying from eBay... and winding up with a product that LOOKS real, but won't register @Adobe because it is a pirate version copied in China

I'm old school. I generally don't ever buy a download. I want the physical media, whether it's a song, a movie, a book or an editing suite. I want the package and what normally comes in it.

John T Smith Oct 13, 2009 7:17 AM (in response to JSS1138)Anything large (like Premiere) I agree... but I will buy small programs via download... small for me being under $50
I do, of course, follow my own advice and write all downloads to a backup CD in case of a drive crash

John,
You are correct. Prior to that thread, there was at least one other, on counterfit Adobe PS packages from Singapore, that had fooled several legit resellers, who got badly burned. Not sure what their distribution network was, but IIRC, most were on Adobe's list of resellers. These were really good counterfits and fooled most. They had done everything correctly, except for having a "Printed in Singapore" label and of course no legit S/N, so that the product could not be Activated.
For me, it's the Adobe Store, even if I can save a few $'s elsewhere. As I, like Jim, always want my media, I just place my order with Adobe and sit back and wait.

John T Smith Oct 18, 2009 3:33 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)I am not doing this for pay (which might have a different license agreement) so I take advantage of Education discounts when I can
I have Win7 64bit for free through my University employer, and plan to buy CS5 the same way
I downloaded Win7 and wrote the ISO to DVD for eventual install... I will buy physical discs for CS5
