1. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 5:18 PM (in response to dmceathron)Perhaps I need to relink the preview files, but I'm not sure how to do that...

2. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo Jul 6, 2009 5:20 PM (in response to dmceathron)Can you offer any clues to what may be triggering this?
For instance, are any of your files saved to a second or external hard drive?
Are your drives set up with any non-standard (i.e., RAID) configuration?
What are your source video files, by the way? I can't imagine why a 50 minute video would take 7 hours to render! On even a modestly powered system, it shouldn't take more than 2 hours.
And why is your audio out of sync?

3. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
Bill Hunt Jul 6, 2009 5:21 PM (in response to dmceathron)Did you move anything? By this, I mean did you Move/Delete any files or folders, Move this Project, etc.? Is this Project on an external HDD, that might have had another drive letter in the past?
I've only seen this, when I did one of the above, and then PrPro (never had it happen in PE), asked where the Render files were. These were all cryptic numerically named files, and if I could locate them, PrPro would re-link to those, and all was good - green lines everywhere that I had not changed.
Did you get any "missing file" dialogue screens?
Odd, and good luck,
Hunt

4. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 5:32 PM (in response to Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo)Files are all saved to the same drive, I have not moved anything.
I let it render overnight, got up, the timeline was green, I hit save, restarted the computer and then tried to open the project and the timeline was red.
The audio needs to be synced because I used an external mic for an interview, so it is a completely separate file.
I am working with HD video - converted from mp4 to mp2.

5. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 5:29 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Nope, haven't moved a thing. I can find the render files by hand, but PE4 doesn't ask me where they are...

6. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo Jul 6, 2009 5:41 PM (in response to dmceathron)When you say HD video MP4, do you mean AVCHD or flash-based MP4, as from a Flip camera?
And how did you convert it to MPEG?
And what project settings are you using in your Premiere Elements project?

7. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 5:54 PM (in response to Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo)The video was MP4 straight from the Samsung camera transferred via USB.
I converted it to MP2 as per this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/446193?tstart=0 using Super C, as PE4 and my new "fancy" Vista laptop were not happy about the files format and I was getting a blue screen and a restart.
I have been doing this for multiple different videos, with no issues until now. Although I have not reopened these projects since I started rendering them. Perhaps they will all have red timelines as well.
As far as project settings - what specifically do you need to know? I believe I am using the NTSC widescreen preset... Anything else I'm happy to provide!

8. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 6:00 PM (in response to dmceathron)Also, interestingly enough, two clips remain rendered upon opening the PREL file. See below:

9. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 6, 2009 6:23 PM (in response to dmceathron)I also just tried pulling the entire Rendered Previews Folder out of where it was located in the Adobe folder and dragging it to the desktop, in order to attempt to force PE4 to locate the render files - it did ask for one, I found it, but alas, it did not relink the rendered files - I end up with the same two clips rendered as before, no change...

10. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo Jul 7, 2009 5:16 AM (in response to dmceathron)If you're using HDV files in a project set up for HDV, the files shouldn't require rendering at all, unless you've added effects to them. There shouldn't be either red or green lines above the clips on the timeline.
I wonder if that conversion program is turning out truly compatible files....

11. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Jul 10, 2009 11:47 AM (in response to Steve Grisetti-JFIrXo)I am using MP2 files after converting them.
I did add effects to all files - color correction, contrast, etc.
I just re-rendered, saved, then "saved as" to ensure I had a backup of the rendered project files.
Seems to be working so far... *fingers crossed*

Bill Hunt Jul 10, 2009 12:32 PM (in response to dmceathron)I hope that the success continues. Keep us posted.
Good luck,

13. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
dmceathron Aug 6, 2009 6:10 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)It ended up happening a few more times, so I learned my lesson and just finished the project and Shared it to the necessary file formats. No rhyme or reason for this happening, but the solution was to just complete the project once and for all so that I didn't have to open it again.

14. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
Bill Hunt Aug 6, 2009 7:35 AM (in response to dmceathron)Sorry to hear that all was not fixed. At least you got the Project out.
Cannot recall if I mentioned this, but in PrPro CS4.1, some people are having a similar issue with Preview files, CFA's and PEK's. I'll track down one of those threads and post the link, if I can find it. In one, Wil Renzces, and Adobe engineer had some comments (unusual to have any Adobe presence in the PrPro fora), and maybe something there will be of help. PrE and PrPro share some similarities, but especailly with CS4.1 there are major differences. Still, there could be something useful and maybe the issue is with some element that is common to both programs.
I'll post back, if I can find the Articles.
Good luck,
Hunt

15. Re: Upon re-opening PREL file, rendered files gone, timeline is red?
sync2rhythm Oct 12, 2009 12:01 PM (in response to dmceathron)Same thing for me here:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/505319
After a very loooong Render, it only located a few Render Files and the rest of the Timeline was RED!
7 hours to render 50 minutes of video sounds good to me as mine was/is...
11hours to render 5minutes of XDCamEX/GreenScreen video.
This project is being edited on a Laptop w/ eXternal HD's.
The eXternal HD's are listed as the same Drive Letter everytime though... but even if they weren't, this is saying that you can NOT move your Project or project/files; this sucks!
Some way to relink Render files would be awesome!!!
