Out of Memory error and page numbering

We are having a problem with Acrobat 9.0.0 and page numbering.  We are using Windows XP.

Our company creates books from PowerPoint presentations, and occasionally we need to mix and match pages, merge books, and sometimes insert new pages within Acrobat.  Then we need to renumber the pages (page numbers are originally generated in PowerPoint).  We'll use the header and footer command to update or remove and recreate page numbers.

We are experiencing a very frustrating problem.  Acrobat will give us out of memory errors while working with these files, although the file sizes are relatively small (0.5-1.5MB, 35-100 pages).  It tells us to save the file, but won't let us save.  I understand from other employees that this "worked in the past," and I believe this was with earlier versions of PowerPoint.

We use the Acrobat menu item within PowerPoint, but we've also tried Printing to PDF.  Here are all the things that we've tried.

      • Closing the file, reopening
      • Using a more standard font like Arial for numbering
      • Copying the file, then attempting to make the change in a new version of the file
      • Renaming the file
      • Copying smaller sections of the files into new files, then numbering those sections
      • Restarting Acrobat
      • Restarting computer
      • Numbering the file on one of our Macs – still got the same out of memory error
      • Using the touch-up text tool to manually update each page number
      • Open the PDF in Adobe Illustrator and renumber each individual page
      • Searching the web for solutions…can’t find anyone having the same problem

      Any help is appreciated
