    Tag tab not editable

    CharlesBelov Community Member

I created a document in Word 2003 Windows with a default language of English (U.S.). The document also contains some Spanish text which I marked as Spanish (Mexico) and some Chinese text which I marked as Traditional Chinese (Taiwan).

My Acrobat conversion settings are to enable accessibility and reflow with tagged PDF, and the Word tab is set to enable advanced tagging. I then convert the document to PDF via Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF.

When the document opens in Acrobat Pro 9.1.3, I run an accessibility check. It says that none of the document is marked for language. So I try to mark the document:

File > Properties > Advanced tab > Language: English (U.S.)

That works just fine. So the document is set. But I still have to set language for the Chinese and Spanish text.

I select the Chinese text. The help says that I can do Option (I don't see an Option menu, so I assume they mean to right-click) > Properties. I right-click the selection and there are no properties. I go to the tags panel and choose Find Tag From Selection. I right-click the tag and choose Properties. I get a TouchUp properties dialog. Everything is grayed out in the Tag tab. I click Close.

I try the same thing in the parent Normal tag. Same results.

I try to edit the parent of the Spanish text. Same results (see screen print below).

How do I un-gray the dialog so that I can edit the language drop-down?screen-print.png

Instead of using Find Tag by Selection, try highlighting the text with the Touch Up Text Tool.

Touch Up Text >> highlight text, right click >> Properties >> Tag tab >> Language.

This worked for me. They do need better instructions with this feature!

Well, that was interesting. Your instructions work as you said. Unfortunately, it apparently messes up the document tagging.

Let's go back to the beginning. I have a document that was tagged by Adobe's Word Convert to Acrobat PDF macro. Here is the document and tags:

            screen-print-before.png

I run the accessibilty full check and get the message:

"All of the text on this page lacks a language specification."

I then follow your instructions to assign a language for the Chinese and Spanish text. I rerun the accessibilty full check and get that the language specification is missing for each of 5 paragraphs. Clicking each item turns out to refer to the 2 English lines and the 3 blank lines between each line (because each of the blank lines was created with the Enter key in Word).

So far so good. I then do File > Document > Advanced and set the default language to English. I run the accessibilty full check and get the message:

"None of the contents or annotations in this document are contained in the structure tree."

And the tags now appear as follows:

            screen-print-after.png

On the possibility that it was the assigning the default language to the document, I went back to the original PDF and just did your instructions. When I do "File > Save as" is when the document structure gets detached from the tags.

Oh, and it appears doing a save as is also what locks up the tags tab and grays it out. It happens with the touch up text tool just as it happens with the tag tool. Closing and reopening the document un-grays the tag panel for the touch up text tool.

Looks like I have a couple bugs to report.

Oops, you get solution credit. I marked your answer as helpful before I discovered the problem was actually solved.

It turns out that the bug I reported in my previous posting only holds while the file is still open. If I close and relaunch Acrobat and reopen the file, then the tags are fine and Acrobat reports no accessibility issues.
