1. Re: Return for InDesign hangs
AnneMarie Concepcion Nov 11, 2009 8:46 AM (in response to IowaBoy9)Assuming you're not having this problem with *every* file (in which case you should try to diagnose it), then yes, you can workaround the problem by returning files manually.
Be sure you update the stories and check them all in before sending them.
Then do this:
1. Tell your designer to open your layout, go to their Assignments panel, select your assignment (it has a package icon), and choose Cancel Package from the Assignments panel menu. Nothing changes on their end except the stories become available instead of being checked out to the Remote User. They'll need to do this before they can update anything.
2. You send your designer the content files (the ICML or INCX files) in your assignment's "content" folder. They don't need the actual assignment file or the XML files. Just the InCopy files. Probably best to put them in a folder and .zip them before attaching them to an email.
3. Tell your designer to locate the story/content files for the layout on their computer or on the server, wherever they keep them. They're probably in the project folder, in the ProjectFolder > Project_Assignments > content> folder. They should unzip the attachment you sent, and replace the ICML or INCX files in the layout's content folder with the same-named ones you just sent. If they get a prompt alerting them they're about to replace files, that's good. They should say Yes.
4. Then the designers should be able to see your changes in the layout. (they may need to update the content).

2. Re: Return for InDesign hangs
IowaBoy9 Nov 11, 2009 9:58 AM (in response to AnneMarie Concepcion)Thank you AnneMarie! Just one follow-up question. You mention that we should diagnose the issue if we encounter this problem with every file. I would say that we have encountered it enough times to warrent at least an outline of a process of diagnosis. I saw in an earlier post that this issue can be caused by anchored text boxes. There are plenty of those in these files. (There are over 200 files we are needing to process.) At any rate, how would you suggest we diagnose a file that hangs during the Return to InDesign process?
