1. Re: Not responding when trying to work on BR project
Bill Hunt Nov 27, 2009 2:47 PM (in response to h2ofun)Dave,
The first thing that pops into my mind is, do you have Windows Indexing ON? It can lock AV and working files, while it does its "thing." The behavior is just as you report - Not Responding for a period of time, then things seem to come back. The Windows Indexing can be turned OFF in your HDD's Properties Panel in the OS. It cannot really index these files, but that will not stop it trying and trying, keeping these necessary files locked in the process.
Note: other programs, like Roxio and Nero have "sniffer modules," and indexing modules. These can really mess things up, especially with large Projects and large files - both Assets and working files. See below, to check if you have any of these running. You'll need to check the time carefully. Maybe next Not Responding, write down the time, and then in Event Viewer check for that time. You will likely NOT get warnings, or errors, but regular messages - check everything at that time and see what is being started up and is running.
If that does not help, this ARTICLE might help you find "clues" as to what is happening on your system, when the program goes into Not Responding.
Good luck, and hope that something helps,
Hunt

2. Re: Not responding when trying to work on BR project
h2ofun Nov 27, 2009 3:25 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Great ideas, will give the a try. I tried my project again and when it hung, I just left. Come back in an hour and it would be live. Another thing I am finding is if I save the project, (Which hangs also), it at times responds better.
I have another project that was hanging, so will give your ideas a try.
Thanks

Bill Hunt Nov 27, 2009 3:58 PM (in response to h2ofun)Dave,
I'm sure that other things could come into play, this smells like Windows Indexing. When you Save, you rewrite your .NCOR file, which can be rather long, especially on a large Project. As soon as Indexing notes that the file has changed, it locks it, while it goes line by line, character by character. This could hang Encore, while it waits to get at its own file.
Hope that it is just that simple, and good luck,
Hunt

4. Re: Not responding when trying to work on BR project
h2ofun Nov 27, 2009 4:22 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)I noticed there are 2 types of indexing. One is the windows search service, and the other is indexing on a drive. Not clear how they relate to each other.

Bill Hunt Nov 28, 2009 10:01 AM (in response to h2ofun)Dave,
You might have to look in a couple of places. Two would be:
Task Manager, to what Programs/Processes are running, and what their exact names are.
MSCONFIG, where you can track down anything that is loaded/launched at Startup.
Then, you might need to Search your system for those executable files, if the Path is not shown. That Path should give you some idea as to what the program really is. An example would be one of the "sniffer," or "watcher" apps. When you trace it back, you might find that it's some module in, say Roxio, or maybe something in your Windows\Systems folder. This could be either a MS app., or maybe one that was added by another program. If the latter, you might have to Google that file, to find out where it came from.
Good luck,
Hunt

6. Re: Not responding when trying to work on BR project
h2ofun Nov 28, 2009 11:23 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)By turning off the indexing, I was able to get my projects to work. Encore still hung, but did not seem as bad as before. Not sure there is any real easy way to find the root cause, since it still goes into a non responding mode. But, will take every little piece I can get until Adobe finds root cause.
Thanks for the lead.

Bill Hunt Nov 28, 2009 12:31 PM (in response to h2ofun)Dave,
Glad that you got this Project to Burn successfully.
My guess would be that there is some program/Process, that's lurking in the background, and stealing your resources, or locking up your files. Sometimes, finding these take a lot of detective work.
Good luck,
Hunt
