1. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
JSS1138 Dec 2, 2009 3:32 PM (in response to gold987987987)Does anyone know how to accomplish this task?
1. Chew out the nitwit who bought a Mac.
2. Get the original media and use that.

2. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
gold987987987 Dec 2, 2009 3:39 PM (in response to JSS1138)Thanks, but no time for suggestions 1 and 2. I need to use these clips on my computer now. Do I convert them somehow, is there a codec to download?

3. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
JSS1138 Dec 2, 2009 3:42 PM (in response to gold987987987)That depends on what format they're in. Use the Gspot program to 'look inside' and report back.
It's entirely possible that 1 and 2 may be your only options. (And if so, it's precisely because of 2 that you also need to do 1.)

shooternz Dec 2, 2009 3:54 PM (in response to JSS1138)You may need this.

Worked for me when cross platforming from FCP

Colin Brougham Dec 2, 2009 4:05 PM (in response to gold987987987)Do you know what the source footage was? Was it HDV? If so, there's a chance that the footage was captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)--and that means that all you can do is recapture the original footage or convert the files on a Mac. There is no AIC playback component for QuickTime on Windows, unfortunately.
If the files are DVCPRO50 or DVCPROHD, you can use the Raylight decoder as shooternz suggested, or another option are the Calibrated Software decode components.

gold987987987 Dec 2, 2009 7:42 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)The files are DV. I would hope that makes things easier?

7. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
Colin Brougham Dec 2, 2009 7:46 PM (in response to gold987987987)So the files are just QuickTime DV files with an MOV extension? And they won't import? That's odd, because I use QT DV movies frequently with no problems. You have QuickTime Player (the free version is all you need) installed, right?

Bill Hunt Dec 2, 2009 7:53 PM (in response to gold987987987)If you have QT Pro (US$29 upgrade/unlock) load one of these files into it and hit Ctrl-J. That should give you the CODEC. Jim's suggestion of G-Spot (freeware) should do the same, as the newer version handles more about .MOV files. Personally, I like the info from G-Spot better.
If you are lucky, you'll get the full CODEC info. It might be as easy as using Google to get that CODEC and installing it.
I use a bunch of .MOV files, but they are in the Animation CODEC, and work fine in PrPro, natively.
Good luck,
Hunt

9. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
Bill Hunt Dec 2, 2009 7:55 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Also, with QT Pro, you can easily convert these files to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV (Uncompressed), and they will work fine.
Good luck,
Hunt

11. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
Colin Brougham Dec 2, 2009 8:49 PM (in response to gold987987987)Do your files have extensions on them? It looks like they don't. If not, add ".mov" (minus the quotes) to one of the files, and see if it will import.

12. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
gold987987987 Dec 2, 2009 8:51 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I had to do was open the file in QT Pro. Choose export as AVI movie and save.
The new avi files work perfect in Premiere.
Thanks for everyones help! Crisis averted!

13. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
Stan Jones Dec 2, 2009 9:09 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Try what is suggested but if it doesn't work consider this: I can't find a link, but I had trouble with QT DV; seems QT had trouble with DV quality, so they vary the datarate. this created problems for CS3. I never did find a way around this, but documentation was sketchy and the friend I was trying to help found a workaround. (Output the Apple generated files to tape and recapture!)

14. Re: FinalCut captured clips in CS3, NEED HELP FAST!
Colin Brougham Dec 2, 2009 9:17 PM (in response to Stan Jones)Oh, yeah--that's the nefarious "high quality" flag that was implemented way back when for DV footage in a QT container. It didn't actually change the footage itself, but it signalled the playback application to lower the resolution to one-quarter of the original, thus improving playback performance. Of course, that was when computers would have had difficulty chewing through one stream of DV video, but that's hardly a task these days. Unfortunately, that seems to have remained the default since then, and the only way to crack it is to go into the Movie Properties settings in QT Pro and check the "High Quality" box, or plop the files into Synthetic Aperture's HiQual application (Mac only). Very annoying, as there is no "free" way to do it on Windows, but in my experience, PPro will automatically read an imported QT DV file at full resolution, without explicitly setting the flag; it's only in QT Player and other player apps where it looks blocky.
