Can Not Publish "Step By Step" To Word

    NathanStryker Community Member

      Hello All-

I am trying to publish a "step by step" to a word document, but when I do I get an error message (Print Screen attached).

I use OpenOffice rather then word, is this what is causing the problem? Also the "error log" that captivate is trying to create is non existent because the directory it is trying to save it to does not exist....

      Any help would be appreciated.

          Hello,

Indeed, the print to Word option is only working towards MS Word. Somewhere in these forums there is thread about it.

Ugh... I was afraid of that!

Can anybody from Adobe speak to any potential update or patch to fix this ?

              Hello,

You cannot really count on it that this thread will be read by someone from the Adobe team. Please, fill in a feature request form to be sure that your voice will be 'heard'. You find the link to the form on the main page of these CP-forums.

                Hi there

                This thread surprises me some.

First off, you specifically stated in the subject line that you "Can Not Publish "Step By Step" To Word. Then you go on to say you are using Open Office. I'm not an Open Office user, but is its word processing application known as Word?

Personally, I'd be surprised to hear that Adobe will be issuing any patch to address coaxing Captivate to work with Open Office when most of the world uses Microsoft Office. That's why it's geared toward Microsoft Word. They are targeting the largest possible audience.

If you want the development team to consider building in some ability to work with other Word Processing systems, you need to submit a Feature Request. The link for doing that is in my sig line. The developers are contstantly working on the next version. So if they see enough requests asking for a particular feature, they evaluate and analyze if or how difficult it may be to include the feature.

                Cheers... Rick

                  Hi Rick-

I'm sorry if you took offense to my post, I was not trying to imply that there was something WRONG with Captivate. I just personally was disapointed to find out that I could not publish to a (.doc) file with out having Word installed. OpenOffice has the ability to read and write to multiple formats, including .doc, docx, .txt etc. So I was hoping that Captivate would just create text/image file with a .doc extension. Maybe that can Captivate can not render a .doc file with out accessing some portion of the native Word program, I don't develop software so I have no idea.

What about publishing the "step by step" other reference documents to a .pdf file, that is Adobe's own program, and that would be GREAT (OpenOffice can access and modify PDF's as well). Just a thought.

I'm not trying to knock Captivate at all, I'm think its a great program, I'm a fan of just about every program that I have used from Adobe. I just don't have Microsoft Office and was trying to find out if I had some setting wrong (I've had a number of issues with Windows 7 (64). So I apologize I made you defensive, please don't take this as criticism of Captivate.

                  Cheers!

                    Hi Nathan

No, no offense was taken at all!

I was just a bit surprised that you seemed to be astonished Captivate didn't work with Open Office.

I also didn't feel you were criticizing the product. Heck, I'm among many others that will regularly criticize it myself in the areas where it deserves criticism. LOL Can we say "E-Mail reporting"? Captivate sucks cheese at that. Or what about Full Motion Capture? I regularly steer folks to Camtasia if that's what they are looking for.

I see you note Windows 7 64 bit. To outright steal a line from Dr. Phil: So how's that workin for ya? WRT Captivate, that is. I understand there are some issues one encounters with Captivate on W764.

                    Cheers backatcha! Rick

                      Rick-

Now it is working fine (so far), I've only had it installed for a few days, and at this point I still lean pretty heavily on Flash to create content (read, its new and I dont know how to work it).

The install was not Captivates fault actually it was because I downloaded the beta of flash player 10.1, and I could NOT uninstall it, captivate couldn't find it (it was in programs (x86) and captivate was looking in programs). Finally out of frustration I just did a clean install of Windows. I have plenty of back up drives so I just saved everything I needed and started fresh, and from there I have had no problems.

In general Windows 7 is great OS, I've been using the beta for over 6 months now and haven't had a single problem, aside from the occasional driver issue (which I haven't had since it went into production which is encouraging, one of the biggest problems I had with Vista was sound card/driver issues that NEVER were fully resolved)

The only other "Adobe/Windows7" issues I've had (that were not related to the Flash player) was some weird problem where Fireworks needed to modify my registry everytime I ran it, but that too has been resolved by reinstalling Windows.

I did follow your recommendation and send an email to the "feature request"

                      Hello-

I was trying to publish module to "step by step" text document. I use OpenOffice and don't have Word on my computer. I found out that I could not use this feature with out word. I don't know anything about Software development, but my assumption is that Captivate can not just create a .doc file with out access to some portion of the native word program?

It would be great to be able to use other word processing programs, such as OpenOffice or iWork (for those Apple people out there) I got the impression through your forums that Captivate ONLY publishes to MS Word.

If other Word processing programs are too intensive to "patch", being able to publish them to a PDF file would be a nice work around.  Thanks for your consideration.  Regards, Nathan Stryker 612-208-9081 (please feel free to contact me if you would like more information or know of a work around)

Any good resources online to get more value out of captivate (other then Lyndia)?

                      Regards,
                      Nathan
