Photoshop CS4 "Save For Web" Settings

    Shan-Dysigns Community Member

I have two questions - my logic/explanation may be a little hard to follow, so refer to screenshots:

      1. When "saving for web", in the "presets" drop-down menu, I have created a couple of presets and saved them in the default folder name

      [ C:\Documents and Settings\Shandy Elliott\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Optimized Settings ]

and I have deleted the ones I do not want to use - ever.

I even navigate in Explorer to the above path and make sure no default presets are in that folder (with Photoshop not running). Photoshop keeps re-populating the default settings when I re-open Photoshop and/or each time I "save for web". Is there another location/file in Explorer I need to delete the default presets, or is this just a function of Photoshop to re-populate default presets (which I think is annoying if so)?

      2. When saving a .jpg, there are two ways (at least for my purposes) -

           a. FILE/SAVE AS/.jpg (then set jpeg options)

           b. "saving for web"

What I would like to do is be able to use "save for web", create a specific preset for absolute maximum .jpg quality ( JPEG - 100 in the screenshot - which would simulate the same result [relatively] as if I performed step 2a and used "quality 12" for jpeg options), and for Photoshop to NOT place dashes between words. I know I can un-check the Unix checkbox in "Filename Compatibility" in Edit Output Settings, but that seems to affect ALL presets and not just a single preset. I'm guessing this is just a global un-changable setting - sometimes I wish software was a little more customizable.

The reason I want to be able to do this (in addition to saving as in step 2a) is in some cases, I would benefit from the additional settings "save for web" allows [ namely being able to save a .psd into several different sized .jpg's by simply changing these settings ].

      3.jpg

I do this instead of originally saving a .psd as a 800x800 .jpg, then having to open that 800x800 .jpg, resize as, say, 600x600, then saving again - which I'm basically destroying subsequent .jpg's because I'm re-compressing over an already compressed image. Saving directly from a .psd and having the option to simply resize the output, to me, seems my best option.

      To conclude:

      1. How can I retain specific "save for web" presets while eliminating the default presets?

      2. How can I set a specific "save for web" preset to not place dashes between words while allowing the dashes for all other presets?

      Thoughts?

First rename the presets in "C:\Documents and Settings\Shandy Elliott\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Optimized Settings "from *.irs to *.ir$ or something like that. Then same procedure in "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Presets\Optimized Settings"

This will hide the unwanted presets.

You can try removing also - I rather like to rename than to remove.

Hmm... easy enough. I knew there was probably another folder involved.

One thing I should add for the sake of this post (and for others) is to make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is un-checked in Folder Options (in Explorer) in order to properly rename/disassociate a file's extension (at least for me).

            4.jpg

Otherwise, trying to rename "fileName" to "fileName.ir$" didn't break the file association - Photoshop still recognized the type of file (it's file icon remained the same).

Thanks for the help - this was one of those problems I could have trouble-shooted a while longer and fixed it, but I didn't have that time.
