Getting an alert to work

I have come to realize that I can use the session to check for an new message alert. What I have done is set it up when a user sends a message to another user it updates the new_msg column by putting alert.

I setup an if statement with the session and realized it hasn't work. any suggestions?

I have gotten it to work. It was simpler than I though.
