Thanks for your response.
That option remains greyed out when I try your suggestion. The frustration is that I know I have done this before and it was simple.

Thank for the info. In reading the article it seems to imply resetting individual tools. For what I'm dealing with which tool do you think is involved? I looked in EDIT > Preferences and saw nothing about masking tools, where I figured I should look first.
If the problem is with the SAVE portion, since when I SAVE AS my options are greyed out, do you have any thoughts on where I should specifically look?
Thanks again for any help.

gener7 Jan 11, 2010 8:37 AM (in response to rollsnut)I'm pretty sure it's this part:
"If you have larger trouble, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences file."
A corrupted prefs file can make for many strange problems, and this at least gets that out of the equation by throwing all settings back to default.

Thanks for your input. I did what you suggested and noticed changes on my desktop.
I reopened the jpg file, created a partial mask (for testing purposes) and save the file as a psd. Once again, in the SAVE AS dialog box the only “live” checkbox in the Save Options panel was “As A Copy.”
The jpg file I am working on is the only layer. I mention this because I don’t think this is a problem, but I could be wrong. Image is still 8 bit RGB mode.
Since I had batched process the RAW images to jpg I even went back in Bridge, opened the test photo in Camera RAW saved as a jpg (individually, not as a batch) but still the same result.
I’m not giving up but it is a bit frustrating…
Thanks again for everyone’s help.

Curt Y Jan 11, 2010 9:27 AM (in response to rollsnut)Is you mask recognized as a layer in PS layers box? If not the layers option will be greyed out.

Zeno Bokor Jan 11, 2010 10:38 AM (in response to rollsnut)OK, there's nothing wrong with Photoshop. What you have in those two screenshots are active selections, not masks. If you want to save your selection then use Select->Save Selection. When you save files with saved selections the Alpha Channels checkbox from the Save As dialog should be selected
Save and load selections:

11. Re: Saving with Masks in tact
Curt Y Jan 11, 2010 10:38 AM (in response to rollsnut)Once you have your selection made, just do a ctrl C, crtl V and you have it as a layer. Now when you go to "save as" the layer option will be active.

rollsnut Jan 11, 2010 1:55 PM (in response to D Fosse-QDEaQ1)Gentlemen.
Thank you all. I don't know how I did what I did before but this has been a valuable education for me and yes, I have all the notes.
I played with it to make sure I understood it and could make it happen. I still have lots to learn about this process but THANK YOU all for your patience and direction. I just hope I am as helpful to others on this forum in the future.
Thank you all again.
Now, to parse out the answer vs. helpful. If you're ok with this....I'll enter it soon
