1. Re: Macs are brighter than PC's is it the monitor or software doing this?
4th2ric001 Jan 13, 2010 5:44 PM (in response to TF22Raptor2)It's the gamma; Macs have a 1.8 and PCs have a 2.2.
There is a reason why most of the graphic community uses Macs.
Have no clue how a Mac display will work on a PC; and with all due respect, I don't want to.

Michael L Hale Jan 13, 2010 5:45 PM (in response to 4th2ric001)Even though the display is made by Apple if it's connected to a pc it will use the pc gamma as it will be driven by a pc video card.

Macs now have 2.2 to reduce this discrepancy between platforms. And many of us have already switched to this years ago when it was not Apple's default. This is a system setting, not something you are stuck with when you buy a computer.

That is a bit of hogwash. A default gamma setting has nothing to do with making a computer any more ideal for a graphic artist. If you understand color management, you see the diminishing relevance of your operating system's gamma setting.

Lundberg02 Jan 14, 2010 4:50 PM (in response to Michael L Hale)See g ballard or luminous landscape.
Gamma is for midtones. "Gamma" is actually gamma correction, a method of linearizing the transfer function of a monitor to create a normal eye response.
Macs don't "have" anything nowadays. They used to have an internal 1.4 plus an adjustment, now it's just the default monitor setting of 2.2.
2.2 for web, 1.8 for quality print work.
