    Problems for non-Nvidia users?

      Premiere Elements 8 users,

       

      If you're experiencing frequent crashes or freezes in Premiere Elements 8, and you're NOT using an Nvidia graphics card, then we need to know about it. Please post a reply to this thread specifically if you do not have an Nvidia card. We are trying to gauge whether there are other crash issues in PRE8 that are not related to the driver issues mentioned in the announcement at the top of the forum.

            I am working on a small project with a few standard def avi files and some still jpgs. When I click on Window-->Transitions, PrE 8 crashes every time and I get the dialog box to send an error report to Adobe. This is under Windows 7 64-bit. I just upgraded but had the EXACT same problem running PrE 7 under Vista 64-bit.  Also previously using PrE7 under Vista 64-bit there were numerous random crashes but either they were not repeatable, or there were ways around them.  Always it would just say the program encountered an error and had to close, or something like that.  No useful informaton.  I have not worked with Pre8 long enoough to report more errors beyond the one above.  I have an ATI card, not a Nvdia.

             

            My specs are PrE 8, Windows 7 64-bit, 6 GB RAM, about 500 GB free HD space, Intel core i7-920 at 2.66GHz, 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850

              Had a less than auspicious start a few weeks ago with my first PrE 8 project - it stalled several times, froze up completely a few times and was dreadfully sluggish throughout the project and then took 10+ hours to render six minutes of standard definition video.

               

              Just tried to fire it up for another try and I've hung at the Welcome screen, "gethering user info"... no way out but to kill it in taskmanager.

               

              I have a Core2Quad 2.5GHz CPU, 8.00GB of ram, over 2TB of free space (over 50Gb of SSD on my system drive, and almost 2TB of 3 stripe raid 0), a 512MB Radeon HD4870 card with certainly very recent if not the absolute latest driver, running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

                In my experience, the crashes as well as other performance issues in Premiere Elements 8 appear to be related to its integration with the new, full-featured Organizer.

                 

                To test this, I created a new Organizer catalog and deleted everything from it. With nothing in the Organizer, Premiere Elements opens faster and performs much peppier. (I'm talking about the Organizer program, not the Organize panel in Premiere Elements.)

                 

                In fact, the Organizer also seems to be dogging Photoshop Elements 8.

                 

                If there is some way to disconnect the Organizer from Premiere Elements, I'd suspect it will solve a multitude of problems and performance issues.

                  Hello Chad,

                   

                  I am using Premiere Elements 7 since about 3 months on a dual core PC with Windows XP and an Intel GMA graphics engine.

                   

                  After working decently for a few weeks, PE7 now shuts down everytime I try to Organize -> Get Media -> PC Files and Folders. The program just disappears, no error message. The problem is there every single time I try this.

                   

                  I need this fixed since I cannot use the program.

                   

                  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program AND the same with Premiere and Photoshop Elements together, to no avail.

                   

                  Please help. If this is not the right place to put this, can you please pass it on or tell me where to put it? The Adobe website is somewhat of a maze in that regard ...

                    I've been tinkering with Premier Elements 8.0 since I bought it back in October.  I've been using an Asus Radeon 4850 TOP (factory overclocked) video card the entire time.  I had major issues with PrE8 from the get-go, but eliminated those issues with one simple step, bypassing the Welcome screen.  I have had only 4 - 6 actual crashes since then, along with one annoying but repeatable problem... but I honestly do not belive they are video card driver related.

                     

                    However, I've recently rebuilt my computer & did a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP3 with 2 brand new hard drives & have yet to reinstall Premier Elements (currently re-downloading), but all other hardware remains the same.

                        My processor is Intel Core 2 E7400 processor Dual core processor.  2.8 GHz, 3 Mb L2 Cache

                              I recently bought 4 x Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 laptops each with:

                              Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 2.0Ghz

                              2Gb RAM

                              Intel 4 Series Express chipset graphics card

                              Vista SP1, version 6.0.6001

                               

                              I'm having serious issues trying to capture DV footage using PE8. Each time I try and capture, without fail, the software crashes within 2 minutes of capturing. All camera settings are fine and all capture settings are fine. I've followed the advice in the Support Centre but nothing seems to work.

                               

                              I'm running video workshops using this software and not once has it worked reliably.

                               

                              Attached is a log file from when it recently crashed.

                                I am experiencing frequent crashes with PRE8.  The graphics card installed on my PC is (I believe) a Radeon X300 Series.

                                 

                                I have recently bought PRE 8 to upgrade from PE 3 that I used previously.   The number of crashes is becoming tiresome (that is a polite way of saying how I feel!) but what also makes it frustrating is the fact that every time I reload the software I have to wait for several minutes for the 'background rendering' to complete.  This is so even though I have saved the project with completed rendering.

                                 

                                Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

                                  Looking through the replies to this it seems that it is not just Nvidia users that are experiencing crashes with PRE8 as you suggest and that the problem lies with ADOBE's software generally.  Can I suggest that ADOBE looks at this again, and again, until a solution is found?  Surely it is not necessary to make a new empty Organiser file in order to make the programme work more efficiently as has been suggested.  And ayway how is this done?

                                   

                                  Please work through this quickly and let us all have a solution.

                                    I purchased PE8 this week, and I have not had a successful session yet.  That is, one that didn't end in a crash.  I have created a new project, began to capture video, and less than 2 minutes into the capture, PE8 crashes and asks me to submit the crash report.  I've submitted at least 6 crash reports.  I've tried most of the steps in this Adobe KB article, but I must admit, there are a few I haven't tried, such as running it under a new user account.

                                     

                                    My system specs are as follows.

                                    Dell XPS M1330

                                    4 GB RAM

                                    250 GB HDD

                                    Vista Home Premium 32-bit

                                    Core 2 Duo T6600 @ 2.2GHz

                                      Welcome to the forum.

                                       

                                      You might want to also have a look at this ARTICLE on setting up your computer for an editing session. Even brand new (maybe especially with brand new) computers usually have all sorts of bloatware, that loads on bootup and these can sap one's resources horribly.

                                          With many memory address exceptions, it's a case of some program not reporting its memory usage correctly, or not releasing the memory, when it's closed.

                                           

                                          One of the first thing that I do, to minimize the memory (both Page File and RAM) usage is to eliminate all unnecessary programs/Processes. This ARTICLE will give you tips.

                                           

                                          Now, this does NOT mean that PrE is not faulting with regard to memory addresses, but a more likely culprit would be another program, and PrE is a victim of poor memory address management.

                                            I just used PrE8 for the first time today and it crashed just about every time I tried to add a transition. I had no problem reopening the program and I had no problems with the organizer, just frequent closing of the program. I sent the error reports to Adobe every time.

                                              all transitions?

                                               

                                              We are continuing to investigate the crash issues that users have reported

                                              here. Also, please do continue to send in crash reports when prompted. The

                                              Premiere Elements engineering team does review the reports, and can use them

                                              to help isolate the source of the error.

                                               

                                              For now, our recommendation is:

                                              1) Update to the latest video driver version for your graphics chipset

                                              2) Disable Hardware Acceleration in the advanced settings of your Display

                                              control panel while using Premiere Elements 8.

                                                    Thanks for your reply.    I have been sending in crash reports but only yesterday found that there was a specific section to identify what the problem was.   Happily I am now filing these properly filled in.

                                                     

                                                    I think the transition was a simple cross dissolve.    I will follow your recommendations and see how this works out.

This issue is happening for any transition that I try to use: dissolve, iris, 3d, etc. My video driver is the most up-to-date version available, and my graphics card does not allow me to make changes, so I am unable to disable hardware acceleration. I guess for now I will just have to save a lot and hope for the best when working on projects.

                                                        I have been a Premiere Elements user for about 3 years. I keep upgrading hoping the software becomes more stable, and just upgraded to version 8.  I have two systems, one has a NVIDIA graphics card, but because it is a Sony VAIO, I can't upgrade the graphics card from the link supplied in the troubleshooting post, it says I have to update it from the Sony website.

                                                         

                                                        When I go to Sony's site, I already have the current driver.  So with that wonderful piece of news, I gave up trying to use Premiere 8 on the Sony. The other system is a 1.5 TB Desktop with dual hard drives and 3 GB RAM, using ATI Radeon X1900 Series graphic cards version 8.593.100.0 9/29/09 which is their latest update. Same amount of crashes after the update. I recreated the Plugin Cache, no change, I updated QuickTime - no change, I changed the scratch disk to a different drive, no change.

                                                         

                                                        I have to save every minute or so, or every time I make a fussy change - beacuse I am afraid of losing all the work. Each time I save, when it does save and doesn't crash, it takes about 5 minutes.  Lately, it crashes when I am trying to save. Sometimes I receive an error that tells me I should save it in a different location, but this doesn't work, because I get the same error. then I render , and save and it works.  This morning I opened the file and started working on something else on my Sony, when I finally went back to it, it said it was low on system resources, it was just sitting there doing nothing, I wasn't even working on it.

                                                         

                                                        Also, I keep turning off background rendering (who came up with that bright idea - when the thing is so memory intensive to begin with), yet when I recover from a crash, it's back on - also I can't seem to find where to turn off optimization, the directions in one of the forums says to go to preferences/auto opt or it's not listed in mine - so either the directions are wrong, or I'm not getting enought sleep, because I can't find it.

                                                         

                                                        Every time Premiere crashes, I reboot, turn off all background processes, empty the temp file, and restart premiere - although the welcome screen comes up quickly, the project takes forever to load. The Project is about 90 minutes - about 162KB - and will be an hour when I'm done editing, if it stays up long enough for me to accomplish this.  It's extrememly frustrating.

                                                          Though this is probably not the thread to discuss it, I will beg Chad's indulgence for a quick comment. Background Rendering was a "feature" added to Pinnacle's Studio (at ver. 8, IIRC), and adopted by other consumer NLE's. As most users of S-8 found out, it was totally useless and got in the way of any editing. Still, the reviewers sung its praises. I suppose that they were just theorizing, and never actually did any editing. My guess was with so many of the competitors using it, Adobe finally gave in and added it. Were I using any NLE that had it, I'd turn it OFF as my first task. Even on a monster machine, it only gets in my way.

                                                                Okay after a wiping the slate clean so to speak... Two brand new hard drives, clean install of Windows XP Pro w/SP3, all the latest drivers, upgrade from 2GB to 3GB RAM (opperating in dual channel mode).  I decided first to see if I can still replicate the one recurring problem I had with PrE8... and what do you know... I did

                                                                 

                                                                I though that maybe the modern drives & increased RAM might eliminate the problem but no, it happened again.

                                                                 

                                                                So here's the problem:

                                                                > Start with a 1080i video clip of 1GB or larger (one I tried yesterday afternoon was 1.6GB)

                                                                > trim out the unwanted parts (I cut about 5 minutes of content in about 18 areas of the original clip)

                                                                > add some annotations (I went sparingly this time, only 8 short annotations)

                                                                > save project

                                                                > attempt to "share" to DVD, or hard drive, or upload to youtube

                                                                result = Instant crash, program closes, crash report submission thingy pops up.

                                                                 

                                                                Now it works just fine if I close PrE8 after the save step, then re-open PrE8 & the project I just saved & then try to "share", it works every time that way, but crashes everytime if I don't.  Seems to work fine with original files smaller than 1GB.

                                                                 

                                                                Again, I am bypassing the Startup/welcome/organizer & opening the editor directly, otherwise the program crashes as soon as I try editing the clip.

                                                                 

                                                                Complete system specs:

                                                                ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe socket 939 nForce 4 SLI motherboard

                                                                  A few comments:

                                                                   

                                                                  With the other costs you have incurred I'm a little surprised you only upped your RAM from 2GB to 3GB. If your XP is 64 bit I would suggest 8GB minimum. If 32 bit then 4GB would be best.

                                                                   

                                                                  You say that all drivers are up to date. Is that via Windows Update, the suppliers site (e.g.Dell, HP etc...) or the producers site (e.g. ATI, nvidia etc...)? If either of the first two then go to the ATI, nvidia, asus and realtek sites for the latest drivers. Especially Realtek - when a previous PC of mine (Medion)  had onboard Realtek the drivers from the suppliers site were always significantly older than those from Realtek and, after a year or two, were no longer updated at all on the Medion site.

                                                                   

                                                                  You say you bypass the opening welcome screen. I suggest you try it without the bypass.

                                                                   

                                                                  You should follow the advice given in the FAQ's and Tips & Tricks for this forum - especially concerning source footage and conversion to DV-AVI.

                                                                    I want to provide an update on my own issues with PE8.  I decided to capture the raw footage from my camera using Windows Movie Maker.  I captured 20 minutes of SD footage (~5 GB) into one avi file.  Without disabling any services or programs running in the background, or any other special activity before starting the program, I pulled the avi file into PE and worked with it for almost an hour without any problems at all.  When I say "worked with", I mean that all I did was split the video and delete some sections.  I did not add transitions, still images, titles, or anything else.  When I was done, I rendered it to a Windows Media file, which played without any problems.

                                                                     

                                                                    At this point, I must believe there was some issue between my camera and PE.  My camer is an older Sony MiniDV camera.  I do use FireWire, and PE would begin the capture.  The problem was that it would crash shortly after the capture began.

                                                                     

                                                                    Anyway, I'm pleased at this point because I have my video in and have been able to work with it.  If I have problems with transtions or other things, I'll probably report back.

                                                                      This was just a minor update till I can afford the rest of the parts I need to build a new video editing rig, which now stand at just a CPU & RAM!   Actually, I paid all of $19 out of pocket for the two hard drives, and DDR is a bit more expensive than DDR2/DDR3, it cost me $90 for the 2x1GB kit to replace one of the 2x512MB kits... I can get 4GB of OCZ DDR3-1600 for that much.  Though I actually had the 2GB kit running in my other PC till this recent refresh.

                                                                       

                                                                      I won't bother to switch to a 64bit OS till we have a lot more "native" 64bit apps, not just 32bit apps with 64bit wrappers.   I do have both Windows XP Pro & Windows 7 Pro in 64bit version as well as 32bit BTW.

                                                                       

                                                                      As to the drivers... I noted that in my previous post... though not exctly word for word.  BTW, I am the OEM (supplier)...

                                                                      Motherboard drivers directly from nVidia, even though the ASUS design doesn't strictly follow nVidia's reference design, ASUS stopped updating the motherboard drivers before the socket 939 platform died...

                                                                      Video card drivers directly from ATI

                                                                      Sound Card drivers from ASUS even though it's a Realtek chipset, the ASUS drivers work better.

                                                                       

                                                                       

                                                                      Apparently you aren't aware of my campaign to get Adobe to fix or trash the welcome screen / organizer...  if I go through it, I can't even begin an edit, without a crash.  It's called a work-around.... you find a problem, then find a way to go around it so it no longer causes you problems.... it doesn't fix the problem, but at least I have software I can now use.  Besides, for someone like myself, it's nothing more than excess baggage that I don't need or want.

                                                                       

                                                                      The other problem I mentioned, appears to be a memory handling problem on the part of PrE8 since it works fine if I close PrE then re-open it, but crashes if I go straight from editing to publishing... sorry "sharing" (as they've labled it) without closing PrE.  Once I've saved my edits, PrE should be able to free up that memory without closing the program, but it doesn't... thus the crash.

                                                                       

                                                                      I've yet to find a program to convert my files to AVI without degrading the quality.  And I've actually gotten PrE8 to work directly with my JVC's .MOD files with excellent results, even with very poor lighting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjk49vV8f6M

                                                                          Welcome to the forum.

                                                                           

                                                                          The "Device" error is usually related to either the burner, or the blank media in the burner. A variation on that error is "SenseCode" errors.

                                                                           

                                                                          Since your burner was "found," it seems likely that you do not have some other software "hooking" your burner. This usually results in a "no burner detected," or similar. As an aside on this - Adobe programs need 100% control of a burner, and some software, like Roxio, or Nero, will hook the burner at bootup for their virtual drive, packet-writing modules, DLA, or InCD.

                                                                           

                                                                          Now, what brand of blank media are you using? I strongly recommend Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden. Brands, such as Memorex, TDK, recent Ritek and ALL "store brands," are to be avoided, like the plague.

                                                                           

                                                                          Next, check to see if there is a firmware update for you burner. If so, update that.

                                                                           

                                                                          I doubt that this is a video driver issue, though updating those (along with the audio driver) is a good, prudent move.

                                                                            Facing similar problems, as soon as I am cutting and shifting scenes in the time-line, the system crushes.

                                                                            Guess it is somehow related to the new organizer incorporated in version 8.0.

                                                                             

                                                                            Went back to previous installed Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0, which is working fine and fast!!!!!

                                                                             

                                                                            Is there anybody who can report that version 8.0 is working fine?? Waiting for an update, work around or suggestions on how to fix this problem.

                                                                                    I am experiencing frequent PEL8 crashes and I am not using a NVidia card. The crashes seem to occur at various points during capture/edit/output. The most recent crash I experienced was capturing video from a Sony camcorder using firewire. I started the capture and after about 30 minutes, PE8 crashed and I was left at the desktop. My PC specs are:
                                                                                    Asus P5Q-EM
                                                                                    Pentium Dual Core 3.0 GHz
                                                                                    2 GB RAM
                                                                                    Intel GMA X4500HD with latest drivers
                                                                                    Realtek ALC1200 audio with latest drivers

                                                                                     

                                                                                    I hope this is resolved soon. I am on my third version of PEL and it has served me well in the past. I'm not sure I can deal with the regular crashes considering that a typical video production may involve over 30 hours of PEL work. I very much want to continue to use it as it's a very powerful and useful app and I have invested a significant amount of time and money in it.

                                                                                      My problems appear to be the same as or similar to Doug Paulett's.  HandyCam with FireWire inter-

                                                                                      face, random halts and crashes.  Video clips don't play right either; still trying to see if that is operator error.  The card is ATI.
