DRM Error for older version of Adobe DRM

Hi,

I have a book that has an older form of Adobe DRM which Adobe Digital Editions will not open. Here is the error that is generated when I try to put the book into the library:

Your Adobe software could not be activated.

Is there any way to open this book or is it lost forever? I would hope that ADE is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the DRM. If not I suppose that this is one argument against DRM in E-Books.
