Hello All,

As an afterthought, my client would like the user to have the ability to return to the top of the topic page. Currently there are approximately 450 topics, and the help file is generated as .CHM and WebHelp.

My initial thought was to modify the template, by adding a bookmark in the header (BookmarkOne), insterting text in the template footer (Return To Top) and linking the text to the bookmark.

However, I cannot link the text to the bookmark because the template does not appear in the Select destiantion...options. I tried Top Level Folder and All Folders, to no avail.

How do I modifiy the template to apply the hyperlink to all topic? If this is not possible, is there another solution which I can apply (.i.e, the use of javascript)?

Thanks,

Hi CR01

You'll be laughing until your sides hurt when I tell you a super easy way to do this.

DO NOT insert a bookmark! That is a waste of time and effort. Just create a link that says "Back to top" and the destination is simply " # ". The " # " forces the page to reload and display from the top!

Wasn't that easy?

Cheers... Rick

Hello Rick,

A perfect example of the KISS principle in action. I cannot believe it is so simple.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm new to RoboHelp and to HTML.  I'm using RoboHelp 8 HTML, my primary layout is Microsoft HTML Help.

I tried the steps for creating a Back to Top link, but it didn't work.  Now when I generate and click the link I get a page that says "This program can not display the web page."  I'm sure there is a very obvious reason for this, but I haven't got a clue.  Please help!

Hi there

What is your output type? CHM? If so, are you running it from a network location?

Hi,

I did have all my files and folders on a network, but I moved them to the local

drive.

My primary layout is Microsoft HTML Help.  Is that a CHM?  Sorry, but when I say

I'm new at this...I'm really new at this.  I'd never heard of a CHM until about

Maybe you can help me with another question.  Since I needed to move everything

off the network on to the local drive, I moved the "My RoboHelp Projects"

folder, but RoboHelp created a new one on the network. Why? How do I keep that

from happening? And what is "desktop.ini"? I tried to delete the new folder but

I got a message saying "If you remove it (the desktop.ini file), your computer

or one of your programs may no longer work correctly."  What is that about?

Thanks for your reply!  I really appreciate your help.

Jenny

Hi Jenny and welcome to RoboHelp!

Okay, I'm lazy today so I suppose I'll tackle the really easy one first.

Desktop.ini is a configuration file that Windows creates. I think it stores information about custom colors and such that you are able to use with folders. So in short, "It's a Windows thang" and you really don't need to worry about copying it.

Pull up a chair and let gramps tell you a RoboHelp story. Many moons ago RoboHelp wasn't as friendly with project data as it is today. It used to be that if you created a project, it would just plop it right in there with the other application files. That's generally not a good thing. Windows has offered the concept of "My Documents" for a long time. So I'm sure the developers thought it was a good move to have RoboHelp create a My Documents/My RoboHelp Projects folder. That in and of itself isn't a bad thing, UNLESS...

In your case it would appear that My Documents is on a Local Area Network (Strong failure buzzer sound here). RoboHelp projects don't survive well in a Network environment. They like to be on your local hard drive.

As you have seen, RoboHelp will insist that the My RoboHelp Projects folder exist. So just ignore it. In all RoboHelp classes I facilitate, I advise the following practice (which I follow myself). Create a folder near the root of your drive. Call it C:\Projects and place your projects there.

C:\Projects

C:\Projects\Project 1

C:\Projects\Project 2

And so on.

Hopefully this was helpful in some small way... Rick

Thanks! That really helped a bunch! Any ideas on why my back to top link won't

work? ) I am not running it from a network location, everything is on my c

drive now. If Microsoft HTML Help is a CHM, well, then that answers your other

question. Thanks!

Hi there

I'm pleased you solved the problem. Can you be more explicit about what you had to do to solve it? Perhaps it will help the next person down the line that encounters what you did.

Cheers... Rick

I had my topics in different folders within the Project Files folder.  Apparently that doesn't work to well when you are using a Master Page with a Back to Top link.  I don't know why, but it doesn't work.  For whatever reason the link that originally looked like this:
    <p><a href="#">Back to Top</a></p>
after viewing the topic it looked like this:
    <p><a href="..\#">Back to Top</a></p>

And I would get the "cannot load this webpage" message.
So, when I moved everything out of separate folders the link worked just fine.

I did discover, however, that the Master Page-Back to Top link doesn't work with topics that are created by linking to Word documents, for the same reason.  It puts the "..\" in front of the "#".

Hope that helps anyone else who had the same problem.  If anyone has any other suggestions or comments, please let me know!
